Gotcha and JimIslander skunked?!!!

Makes me feel better, but no darn fun to get skunked! It used to happen a lot more, so I really can’t complain. Was a beautiful day on the dock, and Lee and I talked about a lot of useless stuff.

Feel better? Do what? You’re must take this whole ā€œskunkā€ thing way too seriously, man. We hung out and casted for a couple of hours on a bluebird Friday afternoon since we couldn’t go in the boat as planned. I thought we had a good time just hangin’ out, and that was the goal for me. We weren’t fishing a tournament, and you can’t make fish be where they aren’t, my man, so don’t sweat it. I didn’t even think twice about not catching fish. I honestly wasn’t expecting to catch anything there anyway because that bank hasn’t produced worth a toot in a good while. I just figured it would be better to walk out there and cast and chat for an hour or two on such a nice day than to stay indoors. I go there because it’s convenient, being across from my house. I like to walk out there and cast and enjoy the fresh air sometimes when I can’t get out in the boat. Catching fish is a bonus. I can’t count the times I’ve walked out on a dock by the house or the office just to cast for a while without even getting a bite. I fish because I’m a fisherman. I’m not a fisherman because I fish. There’s a difference, and appreciating that difference is what it’s all about.

I never like seeing anyone get skunked Lee but, it does make me feel a little better when I see it happen to experienced fisherman. Not because you were skunked but, because I see it even happens to the old salts. What really kills me is coming home after a day of zero fish and seeing report after report of folks killing the fish. Don’t get me wrong, I cherish every day I am able to get on the water but skunk reports remind me that you aren’t always going to catch something.

Really? Don’t be so hard on yourself, DF. It’s just fishing, my friend. Don’t ever sweat being skunked. No one became a good fisherman without getting plenty of skunk days. That’s why some people are tight-lipped about their better spots–because they came by them the hard way. Hunting is the same. Everything in life is the same, actually. The skunk days are how we earn it. When I go fishing, I’m not worried about being skunked. It honestly didn’t even cross my mind Friday until JimIslander posted this. LOL. I joked with him about all the fish we caught Friday as he was leaving, actually (sarcastically). Like I said, I can’t count the times I’ve walked out on a dock and casted for a while just to cast and enjoy the time–without even getting a bite. When I fish, I’m either hunting fish, staying on a school I’ve found, fishing with a buddy who has found some fish, or just trying to spend some quality time not even caring. Often, it’s more about hanging out with a friend than anything else. If you’re too worried about being skunked, you’ll never scout out new water or try new things, and you’ll have a worse time. Everyone has bad days on the water. The more time you spend, and the more water you cover, the less it happens. I do, however, remember times past, back when I was first trying to learn Lake Moultrie and Marion. I was bummed for a while when I was having a hard time finding the bass. There was no website like folks have today, and no one was inclined to help newbies. Once I learned the fish, though, it was downhill from there. With the saltwater, I was fortunate enough to grow up in a fishing family and with a neighbor who resembled the ā€œold man and the seaā€ā€“Arthur Ellis. He was a trout hound who fished nearly every day, and he really helped me learn the trout on the Stono as a teenager.

Now, I’ll grant you that offshore fishing is another thing entirely. Getting skunked when you spend a grand on fuel is no laughing matter.

Anyway, if it makes you feel better to see that a

Thanks for the advice Lee. I’d love to wet a line with you, let me know when you have a day and I’ll work something out.

Makes me feel better to know that Capt. Teuton also gets skunked on occasion.

I still had a blast!

JimIslander,

I did a load test on the battery today, and it’s a gonner. (That’s why we couldn’t put the boat in Friday.)

All that hype over Odyssey batteries, and it only lasted all of 1.5 years. Oh, well, I went out and bought a $50 regular-joe battery to replace it today so I can get back on the water. I’ll hit Odyssey up for their warranty later. In the battery’s defense (sort of), it did sit for months without being used, but I’m not sure that excuses its premature failure because my wet-cell TM batteries sat the same time unused and not connected to a charger, and when I hooked them up to the charger last week, they were fully charged–hadn’t lost anything over the long sit, and the auto-charger didn’t even engage when I hooked it up (which surprised me, actually). The Odyssey, which has a perko off swith to all circuits, is toast, though. No offense to the Odyssey fans, but that’ll be my last high-gloss battery.

Anyway, I should have the juice back in the boat by tomorrow so we can go hunt some fishes this week.

Dont worry Capn. Vessel maintenance is easy to let slip. Youll get em next time.

At least you learned a lesson and got to spend some time with a good friend. What more could you ask for? I appreciate you letting us young bucks know that you old experienced salts can slip up now and again. Thanks

Just be thankful it didnt happen out on the water with a storm headed your way.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.
