Makes me feel better, but no darn fun to get skunked! It used to happen a lot more, so I really canāt complain. Was a beautiful day on the dock, and Lee and I talked about a lot of useless stuff.

Feel better? Do what? Youāre must take this whole āskunkā thing way too seriously, man. We hung out and casted for a couple of hours on a bluebird Friday afternoon since we couldnāt go in the boat as planned. I thought we had a good time just hanginā out, and that was the goal for me. We werenāt fishing a tournament, and you canāt make fish be where they arenāt, my man, so donāt sweat it. I didnāt even think twice about not catching fish. I honestly wasnāt expecting to catch anything there anyway because that bank hasnāt produced worth a toot in a good while. I just figured it would be better to walk out there and cast and chat for an hour or two on such a nice day than to stay indoors. I go there because itās convenient, being across from my house. I like to walk out there and cast and enjoy the fresh air sometimes when I canāt get out in the boat. Catching fish is a bonus. I canāt count the times Iāve walked out on a dock by the house or the office just to cast for a while without even getting a bite. I fish because Iām a fisherman. Iām not a fisherman because I fish. Thereās a difference, and appreciating that difference is what itās all about.

I never like seeing anyone get skunked Lee but, it does make me feel a little better when I see it happen to experienced fisherman. Not because you were skunked but, because I see it even happens to the old salts. What really kills me is coming home after a day of zero fish and seeing report after report of folks killing the fish. Donāt get me wrong, I cherish every day I am able to get on the water but skunk reports remind me that you arenāt always going to catch something.
Really? Donāt be so hard on yourself, DF. Itās just fishing, my friend. Donāt ever sweat being skunked. No one became a good fisherman without getting plenty of skunk days. Thatās why some people are tight-lipped about their better spotsābecause they came by them the hard way. Hunting is the same. Everything in life is the same, actually. The skunk days are how we earn it. When I go fishing, Iām not worried about being skunked. It honestly didnāt even cross my mind Friday until JimIslander posted this. LOL. I joked with him about all the fish we caught Friday as he was leaving, actually (sarcastically). Like I said, I canāt count the times Iāve walked out on a dock and casted for a while just to cast and enjoy the timeāwithout even getting a bite. When I fish, Iām either hunting fish, staying on a school Iāve found, fishing with a buddy who has found some fish, or just trying to spend some quality time not even caring. Often, itās more about hanging out with a friend than anything else. If youāre too worried about being skunked, youāll never scout out new water or try new things, and youāll have a worse time. Everyone has bad days on the water. The more time you spend, and the more water you cover, the less it happens. I do, however, remember times past, back when I was first trying to learn Lake Moultrie and Marion. I was bummed for a while when I was having a hard time finding the bass. There was no website like folks have today, and no one was inclined to help newbies. Once I learned the fish, though, it was downhill from there. With the saltwater, I was fortunate enough to grow up in a fishing family and with a neighbor who resembled the āold man and the seaāāArthur Ellis. He was a trout hound who fished nearly every day, and he really helped me learn the trout on the Stono as a teenager.
Now, Iāll grant you that offshore fishing is another thing entirely. Getting skunked when you spend a grand on fuel is no laughing matter.
Anyway, if it makes you feel better to see that a
Thanks for the advice Lee. Iād love to wet a line with you, let me know when you have a day and Iāll work something out.

All that hype over Odyssey batteries, and it only lasted all of 1.5 years. Oh, well, I went out and bought a $50 regular-joe battery to replace it today so I can get back on the water. Iāll hit Odyssey up for their warranty later. In the batteryās defense (sort of), it did sit for months without being used, but Iām not sure that excuses its premature failure because my wet-cell TM batteries sat the same time unused and not connected to a charger, and when I hooked them up to the charger last week, they were fully chargedāhadnāt lost anything over the long sit, and the auto-charger didnāt even engage when I hooked it up (which surprised me, actually). The Odyssey, which has a perko off swith to all circuits, is toast, though. No offense to the Odyssey fans, but thatāll be my last high-gloss battery.
Anyway, I should have the juice back in the boat by tomorrow so we can go hunt some fishes this week.

Dont worry Capn. Vessel maintenance is easy to let slip. Youll get em next time.
At least you learned a lesson and got to spend some time with a good friend. What more could you ask for? I appreciate you letting us young bucks know that you old experienced salts can slip up now and again. Thanks
Just be thankful it didnt happen out on the water with a storm headed your way.
If you aināt hooked, you aināt doing it right.
