I'm gonna leave a little present in your stored-near-me boat just for that. you can thank me later.

Remember, they have video cameras there.

I’ve “borrowed” your boat 3 times this year. how’d the cameras work?

You sure got that right, I’ve been stuck on almost every sandbar, mud bar, oyster bar (and dockside bar) from the Chesapeake to South America. Sailboats, power boats, you name it, even got stuck in the pluff mud for 4 hours on a windsurfer one time :smiley: Bad part is my wife was stuck with me [:0]

Back in the late 70s we took our little sailboat from Savannah to the outer banks, NC. No GPS, no LORAN, just a flasher depth finder and a compass and chart. We were entering some sound in upper SC early one morning on a full moon spring high tide and strong NE wind, all you could see was water. Couldn’t begin to tell where the channel was. Wife said go left. I said no, go right. I was wrong [:I] We ran aground on an oyster bar at the very top of a very high tide. Not a good thing. 15 minutes later we were high and dry. Keel and rudder buried in the mud. Me, the wife and the dog. Got pictures to prove it, I ain’t proud :smiley:

Got the boat stabilized, turned around and pointing back to deep water with some anchors and jib sheet winches.

That long haired hippie looking guy hauling an anchor is me…

Wife and dog settled in for a long wait. I started digging a ditch from the bow of the boat to deep water, using a paddle and a hammer. I knew we had just passed the highest tide of the month, the evening tide would be much lower, but the next morning t

At least someone is using it. Quit leaving your Zima bottles under the console.

you just crossed the line. don’t say you had no warning.

Uh oh.

Been there as well. The first week I had my keywest, I ended up 100 feet from any water, on the mud flat at mouth of Big Bay creek at Edisto.

Beware the entrance to Church creek off Stono. Boat tilted a little to one side and we both said “uh-oh”. Luckily it was right at low tide so didn’t have to wait too long. :smiley:

Just read a crazy news story today about the Beaufort fire dept. “rescuing” a kayak stuck in the mud. Are you kidding me, a kayak stuck in the mud needs rescuing? Some people might should stay out of boats and play golf or something. Here it is.{quote}

Here is a video of the kind of person that should stay out of boats and off the water and stick to video games or what not.:smiley:

Yep, first time i took my old boat out of folly i turned in a creek at high tide and was running WAO and hit a bar and came to a immediate stop. We got the boat off pretty easily as it was aluminum and only 17 ft long but it definitely made me realize how much attention you have to pay. Especially in places you are going for the first time. I remember when i was a kid my dad and uncle ran a ground right at dark and spent the majority of the night sitting there waiting for the tide to come back in. I just remember sitting with mom on the porch and hearing dad call on the radio to say he was going to be really late and not to worry, but to keep the radio on and nearby(this was before cell phones) just in case. On my lowerance, when you turn it on, it says something along the line of: Do not use as primary navigation source and that you should use official government charts and prudence for safe navigation.

We have all don it. Little boats or big boats. First time I did it was in a friends boat and he went right across the oyster bank. Scratched the hell out of his boat. Second time I ran my 17 foot a ground in bulls bay. Good thing was while I was waiting I caught shrimp. The last time was in my 23 footer on that big sand bar in the Stono going to Kiawah. Had two boats coming at me and another boat tubing in between them. No where to go and when I hit the mud at about 30 mph. I set hard. I had to wait for the tide to go all out and then come back in. Parked my a… in the mud and watched all the boats go by for the day.

Dave,
It was only 8 hours. Notice the sun protective clothing.
Lesson: Don’t explore new skinny water on a falling tide.
