HMS permit

This may help with finding the gross tonnage for both monohull and twin hull vessels: https://www.uscg.mil/hq/msc/tonnage/docs/TG-1_Current.pdf

Refer to pages 7 & 8…make sure you have a calculator and stiff drink handy. Sure hope you all are better at math than I am.

I did not have to include tonnage for my permits. For those of you who wonder, that means I have to get four permits: Dolpin/Wahoo, Snapper/Grouper, Coastal Pelagics, and HMS. Good thing is the first one is $25 and $10 each for additional permits.

Unless something is changed, HMS is purchased from a different process than the other ones you mentioned.

Don’t forget your operator card because your dolphin / Wahoo permit is no good without it

I went on the site and they ask for gross tonnage among other things but this is the angler category. My question is, I’m preparing to take the Captain’s exam but do not intend to actively charter. If I am not chartering offshore do I still need the commercial/charter HMS permit? And I didn’t know about the others. I guess that is why you have to get the others sulcat?

Passing the captain’s exam does not make you a charter vessel. You still need to register the vessel and get the applicable Charter permits. You do not need to do this just because you have your captain’s license. All permits go with the boat not the captain.
