Crab is definitely the best bait but a combination of cut shrimp and fiddler is also a very good bait. I don’t usually fish for em but they sure can pull.

Also forgot to tell ya, if you’re not used to fishing with crabs they all have to be legal, if the man checks you it doesn’t matter if they’re for the pot or for bait—5" point to point.

Go to any fish market and ask them for dead crabs, they got 'em. Makes me FURIOUS that they catch all these crabs and just TRASH 'em.

^ That’s what I do too. Keep them on ice, or they’ll get really bad really fast! Tip the guy at the counter too.

Just curious… Say if you cut a crab into quarters for bait and the man arrives… How’s that gonna go over?

Also for a heads up Crosby’s will sell you dead Peelers. You cannot fish with dead peelers, they are undersized, thats straight from DNR. Well atleast thats what 1 DNR officer told me.

Simon- actually peeler crabs don’t have a limit. I did some research on this last year!
Unless something has changed since I was commerical crabbing, you have to have a seperate license to possess under size peeler crabs.

Penny says there is not a 5 in minimun for peelers and her and her father crab more then anyone I see on this sight …so i’m sure she isn’t leading us astray

In my opinion Dead crabs will “wash out” really fast and may not work very well.

Penny’s dad probably has a license for undersized crabs, which have to be peelers,I don’t beleive anyone without a commercial license and as I said it used to be a seperate license aside from your regular commercial crab license, can possess any undersize crab of any type. I know a peeler doesn’t have to be 5" as I’ve sold plenty back in the day for 10 cent apiece but I don’t think you can possess them with just a saltwater fishing license, but I’ve been wrong plenty of times.

Peeler license $75 and you must carry written agreement from an operator of a peeler operation that they will purchase the peelers from you, hope this saves you a ticket, the law hasn’t changed!
