redbreast does not always reply to topic… but when he does he prefers to shovel ****t on everyone else

I can’t recall ever seeing anything he posted being relevent to a topic. Everything he posted lately was done to put someone down. Its sad that people like him are so miserable with their own lives that they strive to bring others into their own little world. It was easy enough to add him to the ignore list. If everyone did so, he would eventually go away…

pitviper0404 Good advice will also easily add redbreast to my ignore list. I am an avid 30/30 user and have killed many deer with that little rifle. It is a very effective rifle up to 125 yards. I personally shoot 150 grain hollow points and put it right behind the shoulder. It will leave a good blood trail and not waste any meat.

I will look into the slug barrel. I have a Mossberg pump action, so it’s a decent gun but not one of the “elites”. Thanks for the help all!

C-rig is correct on just keeping what you have and using slugs out to 50 yards with a smooth bore. Or if you are staying in that range some good old 00 buck will do wonders.

What ever you do don’t rush it!

if you elect to shoot slugs from a smooth bore id at least get a cylinder choke tube for it. held steady 50 yard shots are realistic and 100 is possible. just for fun i shot at balloons at the end of boggy head range (110 yards i think) and was breaking most of them with slugs from a smoothbore 870. buckshot can also work, but is also random even though your shot may be dead on. just for an experiment to see how it would do i busted a doe at 20 yards during a stand hunt with a full choke winchester single shot that holds a decent pattern. i had 3" magnum shells with 15 pellets and it dropped on the spot, however even being 100% steady and broadside, 1 hit the spine just behind the head, 1 dead center through the heart, another at the end of the heart, 1 in the lungs, and 1 in the front leg, meaning 10 pellets scattered elsewhere even at close range standing still. just my thoughts id much prefer the slug that is much more direct than pellets scattering all over.

I do love a 30/30 hunting in a woods stand. A great gun IMO. Knocks 'em flat most every time. I hunt with a 270 but used a shotgun for a good while. Mossburg makes rifled slug barrels with cantilever and scope for $200 in Cabelas.(for several models) My brother got one for his 870 in lieu of a rifle. He shoots RemPrem Sabot slugs. Good to 150 yds. 50 cal bullet - 380gr @ 1900fsp. You will not have to follow a blood trail! You could kill godzillia with that thing. Years ago he shot regular foster style slugs from a 20ga pump. A smooth bore with a bead for a sight. He killed 6 or 7 deer with it - all within 80 yds - all dropped in their tracks. With some practice your smooth bore is easy good to 80+ yds. Save your greenbacks for gear and gas.
Pro Tip - you can actually find ammo for them too!

That’s pretty scattered for a 20 yard shot!

Best luck with any shot gun using buck shot for me is to split a feed sack and pattern it.

I’ve got an old Remington model 59 that patterns #4 buck shot the best of anything with an IC

a Stoeger that patterns everything but 000 great using a Modified choke the best. Full choke everything starts scattering.

a mossburg 500 that does it’s best pattern with #1 buck shot with an IC.

What has been my observation with a shot gun and buck shot most hunters don’t take the time to see what round and choke works best with the type of buck shot. A lot have the mind set for the tightest choke and the biggest load.

My benelli is full with 3.5 in copper plated #4 buck. Matt look into the federal truball slugs. they are a huge advancement in the slug world. be prepared to loose 30% of the meat you would have got if you shoot a regular deer around here with a slug. The shoulders will be history.

To add to the provenance of the 30/30. Me and my hunting buddy shoot them for certain hunts. With reloaded ammo we have excellent performance from them!
