I keep gut hooking even with circle hooks.

All good advice. If you’re looking for a specific hook to use, try an Owner 4/0 “Tournament” circle hook. It’s a good size for reds less than 35". Plenty strong and good hook up ratio. Can’t remember the last time I gut hooked one on this style. Haddrell’s and the Angler carry them the last I checked.

I will have to agree with trebbletrouble above. I too only use j-hooks. And rarely ever deep hook fish. The other weekend I landed maybe 80 fish. Not one deep hook. With #4 yeah #4 j-hooks. Of course my leaders are only 4"-5",weight after hook and tight line. My experience, leaders over 10", (bottom fishing, inshore, cut bait) is long. No matter the hook type. But wow, 20" 30" 40" leaders? Just my opinion.

On the same topic as the offset hooks…I hate them and don’t understand why anyone sells them. Anybody know of a store or online site that sells 4/0, 3/0 NON-OFFSET in a bulk package? I can find the Owner “Tournament” hooks, which is my go to when fishing on a carolina rig, in the 4-6 packs but I’d love to find a bulk package of 30-40. the 4-6 packs are breaking my bank lately

Amazon has Owner and Gamakatsu hooks in 25ish packs.

Good question, I put my egg slider in between 2 swivels on some heavier mono with about 6 inches of travel then about the same length of leader. This keeps the lead off my mainline.

What I intended to ask was what type of sinker (split shot, egg, bullet, bank, etc) is best on Carolina rig to minimize gut hooking of redfish? Am I messing up by using a sliding egg sinker? Does the type of sinker matter?

Every one is going to gut a fish at some point the trick is to cut it off ASAP as close to the mouth as posable! Don’t try to take it out of the water! I think a red bite a lot like a striper on cut bait, they sucks it up and runs hard.

Increase your hook size 5/0 or larger. I let Mr. Rod holder do all the work and 99.9% of the time its a lip hook.
