Igloo Sportsman Cooler -vs- Yeti

I own multiple Igloos and a 35 Yeti and there is no comparing the quality of the Yeti. I bought the Yeti to be used as a cooler and casting platform. If you are buying a cooler just to keep ice, I can’t imagine justifying the premium to buy a Yeti v. a cheapo Igloo. I boat all the time and I have never had cold beverages at the end of the day in any cooler. Let’s be honest, Yeti’s look cool and that is 95% of it. One really nice part about Yetis is the fact they don’t slide around. One negative and a big negative is they are very very heavy.

One negative, "very very heavy."

Two negatives, everybody hates a thief and EVERY thief LOVES a Yeti.

Three negatives, 1 in 6 hundred trillion fishermen have to keep ice on their boats on a consistent basis for 5 days.

Four negatives, If you are using a cooler as a casting platform… you shouldn’t be casting from a platform. :stuck_out_tongue:

Five negatives, Ummmmm… $400. Uuuuuuuu… $500. mmmmm…, 6, 7, $$$$ The Yeti disclaimer, " I wouldn’t have bought one but… my wife gave me one for Christmas.

Six negatives, the Yeti Smile. Anyone ever heard of the Igloo smile?

Seven negatives… etc…

To be fair, here is the Igloo negative,

One (don’t look for negative number two), "I bought this thing 18 years ago and it worked perfectly but, now I have to go to Wally-World to replace it for the exact same price I payed 18 years ago.

I bought my Yeti for durability not ice retention. If Igloo or Coleman could have made a hinge or a latch worth a (**() Yeti wouldn’t be as big as they are. But even if your not a fan, you have to appreciate the genius of the marketing stratagy. Just like Dos Equis!

So what? Actually true in my case except it was Father’s Day and, if she had not bought it off of Ebay, it would have gone back. While it is sturdy as heck, it doesn’t keep stuff any colder or for longer than my Coleman Marine Extreme. In my opinion, no cooler is worth what a Yeti costs (to me at least) but I have it so I use it. It was a very thoughtful gesture by my wife who was doing something nice for me. Truth be told I ain’t worth a several hundred dollar cooler. Really, why anyone cares why anyone else buys one or doesn’t buy one is beyond me.

my buddy has an engel cooler and wow it works well. kept ice for 5 plus days when we were in the Canada backcountry.

cheapo works for me though! wouldn’t turn my nose up at a free yeti though…

IFly, it is very common for folks to use a 35 - 45 Yeti cooler as a casting platform; they actually make hinges for this very reason.

Funny that I actually use a bag cooler 90% of the time to keep beverages cold becasue it is usually on 2 of us on the boat fishing or cruising.

The Yeti’s are awesome and it’s true they are “wildly stronger, keep ice longer”. Yes I have one. However, if you want a really good cooler on a budget make these modifications to an Igloo for great results. Add rubber feet to the bottom with 5200, replace the plastic interior lid strap with a SS hatch spring, and drill several holes in the bottom of the lid and use them to fill the lid with expanding foam from a can. Easier done by removing the lid so you can let it lay flat. Once you fill it with foam it will expand for 12 to 24 hours. Don’t move it, touch it, or think about for about three days. Then cut the excess off and top the holes off with 5200. You won’t believe what a difference the modified lid makes. I also like to attach a starboard type cutting board to the top side of the cooler lid with 5200.

That sounds like an interesting project for my old igloo. Did you try filling any of the body with that foam, or is there no room?

I have to leave mine in the back of my truck all the time so for me my 80qt Coleman cooler that I got for $5 at a yard sale is perfect. Hasn’t been taken in 3 seasons of leaving it sitting in a busy area in my truck while I fish all day off shore. A Yetti wouldn’t last an hour without heavy security measures.
That being said, if I used the cooler on my boat and didn’t keep it in my truck 24/7/365 then I’d spend more but not $300.

Igloo7 the body of the igloo is insulated the lid is not. Remember the hardest part is LEAVE IT ALONE for several days while it cures.

I’ve got a Yeti 50qt and it makes a great casting platform and cooler. It has a slot inside that you can buy/ make a plastic separator that makes it into two separate compartments. Allot of times I put ice on one side and drinks/food on the other. It’s big enough that my fat butt won’t fall off when I’m using it as a casting platform and it makes a good seat. Unfortunately I found out the hard way that although the Yeti has not slip feet, they are not non-marking. If you slide it over a white deck, you get grey marks…

I will try this and report back. Great tips… I like the cutting board idea as well.

I had a Yeti 65 qt. installed on the slide out rails they offer underneath my leaning post. I spent the money in an effort to upscale the retro fit of my '82 Mako. I figured that if I wanted to sell the boat, the Yeti would be a good feature. I don’t really concern myself with how long it keeps ice as I don’t do more than go out for a low tide cycle, and then head home most of the time. I wouldn’t spend the money for one to take in my truck, or keep on my deck for casual use. Heck I’ve gotten more value out of a Styrofoam low boy cooler, and if some dumb ass throws fish or shrimp in it, I don’t cry over spilled milk, I throw it out.

Someone mentioned the hinges on the cheaper coolers. After one or two summers my hinges would always break on my “cheap” igloo coolers. I replace them with small pieces of nylon straps and they havent failed me since. No way im spending 300 bucks on a cooler. Thieves can steal my old stinky igloo cooler if they want. Ill just buy another… Downside is I don’t have a cool hat and mines not bear proof… bummer.

2" - 3" sections of old garden hose make great cooler hinges. Cut the section, slice it longways one time (caution - cutting anything with a sharp object is inherently dangerous)use the original screws to attach. Miss the old igloo hinges and hate the new plastic pieces they have.

My brother has an Engel and I will say they are very good coolers. His kept ice an entire week while on vacation in Florida. In my opinion yeti’s are just the more popular coolers that every Joe, Dick and Harry wants to have because the logo looks soooo cool. I to watched the same YouTube(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-TE4RnqT0U) video talked about early and decided to get the Coleman cause it just seemed like a no brainier for me. It’s lighter, holds ice just as long as the Yeti and its cheap, bought a 36 quart on Amazon for $31 shipped. I plan on updating the hinges myself to stainless steel ones. Haven’t used the Coleman Extreme extensively yet but I’m going on a camping trip the next three days and I will report back on its performance. For me the more hard core coolers made by Yeti, Engel, Igloo etc. are extremely heavy when loaded and are not meant at all to be really transported. Their more of a just leave it in your boat all the time type cooler. Which, if that’s the case then it makes sense to go with one of those heavy duty coolers, IMO.

How much does a bag of ice cost in Florida?

By the way… what does a week’s vacation in Florida cost? I’m guessing… two bags of ice?

Ummmmmmm… four bags of ice?

I put 2 frozen blue ice packs on the bottom of my Igloos - - ice lasts all day - -I give up 1 vertical inch of space. But, I admit, I’m not way cool.
