Impeller Replacement - First Timer

I just did my F225. Had to cut/split the key down the middle with a dremel blade. Then pinch with dikes or tile nippers and the key comes out. Sand the new one down a bit and put some grease on it.

Shaft key fought me on my old 225. Ended up propping the motor up, heated the shaft with a torch then used a punch and hammer to knock the key out. When you pull the old impellar housing out pay real close attention to the direction of the impellar fins. Make sure to put new impellar in new housing with fins facing the same direction. Also I would recommend some lubricant on the impellar. Makes it go into the housing a little easier and ensures you do not have a dry start up. As long as you do not touch the shifter while the motor is apart you should not have an issue with getting the linkage to line up upon reassembly.

whatever happened here DF?

Try a wrench first, if they seem stuck, go straight to the impact, at lower setting it will work miracles. Nothing to be afraid of on this job . Marine grease on threads and your good to go . 2 beer job here.

Man, just when I thought you didn’t care anymore. I actually did not get a chance to tackle this job last weekend so it is on my list of things to do this weekend. I will say that the other post about breaking bolts had me concerned so, I went out and checked all 5 bolts. They loosened up no problem so, I am hoping for a trouble-free repair. I’ll report back.

Thanks Pea!

I know Peapod has been wrought with worry over my waterpump job so, I wanted to report mission accomplished. All 5 bolts came loose and everything came off and went back on like butter. I probably took twice as long to do it but, I had never had my lower unit off so I looked things over and goofed around a bit. I was surprised at the sand I found inside but was more surprised at how good the impeller looked. I believe this is the first time it has been changed as the lower unit bolts still had factory paint on them. As good as it looked, I am sure I was living on borrowed time. I Cleaned everything up, installed all the new parts, added new gear oil and fired it up. Man, it is peeing a stream like a good old boy after a NASCAR race. I can really see the difference in the pee stream. Anyway, thanks all for all the advice and input.
