“Right of way” is not defined in the rules of the road. You are either the “stand on” vessel or the “give way” vessel. The “stand on” vessel MUST maintain course and speed to avoid collision. The “give way” vessel must maneuver out of the collision path. Why is a “stand on” vessel not technically the same as “right of way”? Because the term “right of way” implies that you are allowed to change course or speed.
That being said, when the rules break down, BOTH VESSELS are required to maneuver to avoid collision.
Judy 2 is a great local guy, you are in his world out there. He has been fishing there for 40 plus years. He was not laughing at you, he was following a route that would not tear up his nets, lots of stuff on the bottom out their. He would be the guy that would risk his life to save you if you were in trouble.

I agree 100%, hence why we hauled a** to get out of his way. Wasn’t trying to start a mutiny with this post haha! I was just curious if we were in the wrong or the other boat was just trying to scare the crap out of us (literally). I have no hard feelings because when it comes down to it, I feel I am responsible for getting out of his way because he is a heck of a lot bigger than me! Gross tonnage will win the fight every time!
Reaper, to be practical about this, very few recreational boaters know the “rules of the road”. That being said, I just assume that everyone is an idiot on the water and I try to stay as far away as practical. I don’t worry about who is right or wrong, because I try to stay out of a collision couse to being with. I’m still alive! If you continue to assume that everyone in the water is trying to run you over then you are probably being safer than most people. A little paranoia and defensive driving goes a long way!
Tommy sells his shrimp off the Judy 2 to the public. Get his number and get on his list for some good priced shrimp. Best to text him and not call and leave a message.
As far as the shrimp boats go, I figure they have a lot going on, whether trawling or culling…they have lots to do including dodging boats.
