Jon Boat vs Small Whaler

You sound like an extremely intellegent person…

Ya gnaw wha I’m sayin?

14 jon boat is gonna be too small. go used at 17-18 jon boat as noted above(maintainence is easier for me). i had a 14 monark and then got a 17.5 g3 and use it most all the time while the 19.5 bay reef sits on the lift. big enough to move around and i dont worry so much about oyster shells and all. and can pull it off all those sandbars i keep finding.

koolaid ?

Just a thought, but you might also consider a Carolina Skiff, ie J16. They had a JV15 with tiller motor, new, for $5k at the boat show. The JV has a bit of a V in front that looks like it cuts the chop. Neat little boat.

if you ever duckhunt, jonboat is the way to go. mine gets a blind on it in november, then in february goes back to fishing. great for redbreast in the rivers too.

I agree- great lile boats that can still get you skinny!

i spent $800 on a 14’mckee craft, tricked it out with storage, center console, live well, pretty much decking all around, poling platform, topped it off with a 75hp merc.

it fast, skinny, tough, and with a seat cushion the ride ain’t bad at all either!!

also don’t give a crap about the gel coat because its a tank. slap some marine text? on the scrapes:wink:

just my opinion, but if you put a little time and money into it you can make the boat perfect:smiley:

Before I picked up a deal on a used 14’ scout with a 25 tiller johnson on the back, I would have sworn there was nothing better than my 15’ duracraft. The little scout handles the chop very well. Live well, trolling motor, nice front deck and the fact it floats in a mud puddle make it hard for me to even get the jon boat wet anymore… especially in the salt. I had some “cancer” (electrolosys) spots come up on the jon boat too… not too good! Just don’t buy too new and you wont have to worry about messing up the gel coat. I’m not too proud to Marine-tex mine if it looks like it may be a leak/water problem- but I’ve only got about $600 in the whole rig w/ trailer.

If you ain’t retie’n, you aint try’n…

I am partial to the little whalers

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

I’d def go with the whaler, more capable boat and will last alot longer. . .whoever talks smack about whaler’s obviously hasn’t owned one.

1985 Boston Whaler Montauk “17”

in general i’m not a whaler fan - but i think those 15’s are a home run

I second the smaller Scout boats. Early this year I bought a 15’ dual console (it has livewell, cooler and dry storage) with a 70 Evinrude and trailer for $2100. It needed a little cosmetic, engine and trailer work but I now have about $3000 total in and it is fast, handles chop well, will carry 3 comfortably or 4 if you like each other. Besides it was my winter-time project boat which kept me from losing my mind.

Looks like I’ve started quite the argument… Lots of intersting points here. Thanks.

Yankin4Reds - Nice refit on that McKee! I had one of the 14s in a dual-console model growing up and have great memories of it. For as heavy as they are, they will fly with a 70 on the back.

why?

Hello GEB,

I currently have a 13’9" Whaler Dauntless (1995 model) Previously, I had a 12’ jon boat (glass) with tiller kicker.

My whaler is on a Jet Dock (Figure around $2200)I also have a 24’ Boat for Offshore.

All this sound familiar.

I love my little whaler in that it is…
Old–but well kept up
Paid for.
Stable and two people can stand up without tipping the boat.
The 50hp Yam is powerful (33mph)
I can get into water less than 1 foot deep.
Selfbailing and rain runs right out of it.

My little jon boat was sunk at my dock by an inconsiderate boat wake, ruining the motor. I liked the little jon boat, but did find two people in each other’s way, and it wasn’t particularly stable when someone stood up.

Those McKee’s are great, as are Carolina Skiffs. (So are High Tide’s)

Whaler’s pound, but mines is pretty dry.

Frankly, you won’t go wrong with either, but I’d get a jet dock even for the aluminum jon boat. Much handier either way.

thx
