That’s all true, but its really a separate issue, IMO. Yes, learning how to get the #%$@ off the launch lane and back a trailer would help immensely, but its a separate issue to the lack of access. It parallels traffic on our roads. We ***** about being stuck in traffic and that we need more lanes and roads so we can get around. No one is saying don’t build more roads because if we don’t build roads nobody else will move here. People are moving here and buying boats everyday whether we like it or not.

Not really full, but just like many are saying way more demand on the few public ramps that we have. The other issue is parking at said boat ramps. This is even the bigger issue as it takes a fair amount of real estate to park all the dualies pulling the 30’ boat trailers so it takes a few acres to be adequate - 1-2 acres waterfront in CHS = BIG $$$$$$. Shoe string DNR budget doesn’t help the matter either. And if SCDOT put the breaks on the DI landing project, look out! - SCDOT is trying to solve the other big issue we have in CHS - the 526 parking lot!
Went out of Remley Point Saturday. Could not believe how full it was when we got back. Trucks/trailers parked everywhere and all down the road, several blocks. Crazy.
“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?
Here’s another potential solution…more marinas. Not the big boat type either, marinas for the simple folks. Considering the amount of water front in the Charleston area and the number of boats and boaters, it’s surprising that there are so few marinas. If there were more marinas for the smaller inshore/nearshore boats there be much less demand for boat ramps. Look a the amount of water front along the Ashley River and there are three marinas, not including Charleston City Marina.
Crowding applies at private ramps as well.
We have one and it is jammed in the Season.
Folks have to drop boats off take their trailer home etc.
Also have a major “attractive nuisance” problem from folks who use the
ramp illegally.
They cut our ramp cable ($300 a pop), sneak kayaks, jon boats and paddle boards in and use the parking lot at night for purposes other than parking!

The Tri-county ran out of room a long time ago. I’m still pissed at the promise of a new Bushy Park ramp, just being a political ploy. However, I doubt that site was being saved for a new World headquarters by the group that owns it. I think some greased hands were involved with promised tax breaks and when new officials were elected, it went away. Just my thought.
I do believe we need more ramps, that’s undeniable. But some simple education would go a long way, especially with parking.
I used Leeds Ave Saturday - and at 12:00 there were trucks and trailers parked out the lot and down the road. What did stand out to me was that there were AT LEAST 7 spots that were open simply due to the fact that someone parked crooked and took up two spaces. Do people just not give a **** about what they do or how it affects others anymore?
Sunday I used Cherry Point in Rockville. My hometown ramp that I grew up using and being the ONLY truck on the ramp has been invaded as well. My parents live on Maybank and sitting on their porch Sat/Sun mornings theres a steady flow of boat traffic coming from OFF ISLAND to use the ramp. One thing I noticed there once again was the simple lack of parking skills. People parking 10-15’ away from the truck next to them, just close enough to keep someone else from parking between. There were no less than 10 parking spaces wasted because people are idiots. It chapped me enough to take pics…and if you’re in these pics, do better.
Think about what you’re doing, park close to the guy next to you, and if you look back at your truck when you walk away from it and think “man I could park better than that,” then (**() it move and park again!
I’m lucky that I moved to Mt. Pleasant before it got outrageously expensive and I’m close to both Shem Creek and Remley’s. But the parking at both is pitiful.
The lot at Remley’s is way too small for a ramp that has to fulfill the needs for 3 counties.
The lot at Shem is so small, we have to try to find a parking place in a nearby shopping center…that will tow you away if you park in the “wrong” place. The shopping center will allow you to park in the first 3 sets of parking spaces near the bank…get into the 4th row and you’ll be towed.
Get there early or stay home.
