Lake Moultrie Sunday night 03/16/08

lynn, keep doing your thing man. all i see is jealousy in these other people that should be giving you props for your skill. dont listen to them. i just wish i had the knowledge you do

from the article i read in the above post, it shows the complaints in the upper lake area mostly. maybe they should come to the lower region to do research. i understand the concern. you could say “we the people” if all people that fished agreed. im not doubting that the population is down. my point being is dont fish them at all for awhile. if there is a slim chance that catching and releasing them will kill them, why bother. as far as lowering the amount you can keep and size, whats the point. you are just giving people a reason to want to throw back their catch, figuring they will wait for a bigger one trying to make the trip worth while. like every story there are -2- sides to it, not trying to argue. just stating my side of the story.

Had breakfast at Blacks Thrusday morning and heard of at least four bass fisherman that caught the limit in the deversion canal last week…with one having a 17# 15# and 12#…thats some pretty nice fish…my personal best is 38# at the mouth of the deversion canal about 35 years ago…also hear they are catching them at the ■■■■ side of the power house during the day…yall tell me when the season is closed and i will stop fishing…the people I talked to have never been on this website and laughed when i show it to them about the striper #'s…now the landing at blacks has only been back open for a week to ten days and more that ten fisherman have cameout with fish…but yall continue on lynn… i guess i would be next if i knew how to post the pictures…hoow many of yall have fished for a striper in the santee cooper area in the past 90 days???..and not caught a fish{ i should say}

You may be right, maybe the stocked striper stick to the dam side and don’t run. I know I have caught stocked striper in murray at the dam that should have been spawning (males milking and females dropping eggs). I do know there were not many fish that ran up the river last year.

I think that if there was more current for them to relate to then they would be more inclined to head upstream - just a guess.

The river has had good flow for a while now. Hopefully you are right

This is a touchy topic for some people, and understandably so.

First off, Lynn’s been great about sharing info on how and where he’s catching fish, particularly on a website where most people don’t share much info. It takes a lot of dedication and perserverence to go at night when it’s cold and nasty out.

People have different opinions on keeping fish…any kind of fish Some people have educated opinions, some people have personal opinions, and some people are just stupid…which is shown in their opinions.

Anyone that doesn’t know that striper fishing at Santee has diminished since the 70’s, and particularly in the last 10 or so years either hasn’t been here to see it firsthand, hasn’t read the paper, or are just too stupid to care. The stupidity shows in the idiots that catch some stripers in the Diversion Canal, then deduce that striper numbers are fine…they’re just clueless enough to realize that any stripers in Moultrie that make an effort to spawn HAVE to funnel through the canal to go upstream.

There’s a lot of reasons for numbers to be down…it’s easy to blame guides, because they have albums full of pictures of “brag boards” loaded with stripers. Water quality has changed, current flows have dropped, and I still maintain that the eradication of hydrilla has contributed heavily to decresed fishing success for not only stripers, but also largemouth at Santee.

There are those that think that there’s an infinite amount of various types of fish swimming around, both in fresh and salt water. The truth is, nothing could be further from the truth. Years ago, the salt guys thought that there was an infinite amount of redfish around here, and they fished the stocks down to dangerous lows…requiring legislation to protect the resource.

Some people believe that DNR makes fishery policy…they don’t. The state legislature does. It’s a long, slow, political process, and anything that may benefit the Lowcountry gets bugggered up by Upstate legislators. I’ve got to give credit to the guides and l

Fish are in the congaree already and have been for about two weeks. So I am thinking the ones at the dam are stocked and have no instinct to spawn. Does anyone know when they typically spawn. I thought it would have been with the full moon this past weekend.

Pitcher, I have to totally agree with you on your post and very well said. I agree just because people see a few fish they think nothing is wrong with the population have their head in a hole. My buddy Rockbottom and I have fished up near Packs Landing for years for Stripers and over the past years have just watched the numbers dwindle. I’m with you on the Hydrilla I think that has hurt alot of the fish. I know in the river near Packs this time of year one cast and you had all the bait you needed to fish for the day. Now bait is almost non-existant. The bait started going away and right behind them the fish got fewer and fewer. I’m sure there are a few fish in the river to be caught, but nothing like there used to be. I agree that it has gone past the point of fixing itself. It is going to take a serious conservation effort to turn them around.

I have said it before and I will say it again - This post is not a slam at LynMCd - he is to be congratulated - he obviously has their number. I wish I could get him to take me. Pitcher - you make good sense - I hope the stocked fish do have spawning instinct - my favorite way to catch them is in the river. Jusaddh2o and myself fished the Roanoke system 4 out of last 7 years with varying degrees of success. Now there is a real conservation success story. If you ever get a chance to fish it (especially in high water conditions) do not pass it up.

Tom. If you think the Saluda was good two years ago you should have been there in the late nineties. You couldn’t help but catch a limit of BIG fish on just about every trip. And being young and foolish, we usually did. Now I release every fish I catch there.

That river is empty of Striper compared to just ten years ago.
