Yeah shrimp season and the end of the year is the worse time for dealing with the DNR, I got a ticket during the daylight for not having lights on, the official sunset was at like 7:50 and it was 6 something and still light out. My ticket was written for 8:31 in military time and I didn’t notice it until the next day. I was home cleaning the boat before official sunset and I should have never received this ticket. I was very cooperative (yes sir, no sir) and accepted the ticket I felt was wrong. A few months later the same officer stops me and starts going down the list and I say do you know officer suchnsuch and he says son I am officer suchnsuch have a nice day. When I got home my fire extinguisher was expired and some one had put all my life jackets and throw cushion in the shed. You win some you lose some.

Moral of the story: Find poles that are less than $110 and ditch them before you get to the dock.

8:31PM time in military time is 2031 hours. if he got you at 6pm, or 1800 hours, how can the ticket be written for 2.5hrs AFTER you were busted. Perhaps was the time on the ticket 1831 hrs?? If so, he wrote the ticket at 631pm. If not, did he lecture you for 2.5hrs AND give you a ticket?? Man, I hate that. Either way it sounds like he was being an arse!
Pro-tip. When I’m out near dusk, and I notice the GPS getting brighter, I turn my NAV lights on, and dim the GPS!
Life is like a piece of doodoo…no matter if it sinks or floats…you always get flushed in the end
I pulled up at 6ish to boat landing, the boat check and conversation carried over to 7 something then the ticket was written. I had a wiring or fuse issue and my bow lights wouldn’t cut on and bilage/livewell went out and the live well was how I notice the issue. I switched fuses and still nothing so I headed in. I was told to always carry flashlights and red and green glows sticks for emergency situations. The next time when he went to go down the check list I said I have everything even emergency glow sticks because officer suchnsuch gave me a ticket because a fuse went out and told me to have them as back ups, do you no officer suchnsuch, I am officer suchnsuch. He may of accidentally wrote it for 8:31 instead of 7:31 and maybe the law doesn’t go by official sunset but when it starts dimming in that area. But the $110 didn’t bother me as much as its the only thing I have ever been in trouble for and technically gave me a record, though it is minor.
Curious…I just searched for the last hour looking for the details, other than it ending at 12 noon…etc… So I ask this then, if shooting time (ducks) is sunset, lets say that is 5:20. I know for a fact everyone sits until 5:20, so based on this lawman’s mentality, at 5:21 we should be ticketed with hunting after shooting time, or is it the fact that I didn’t pull the trigger after that ok? Same scenario, sit the deer stand until 1 hr after sunset, as I am climbing down and walking out, am I now in violation. Sorry, this just seems a bit over the top to me…giving the DNR folks a bad name if you ask me…someone in charge needs to set this straight. Being caught in the act is a violation, sitting at a landing and writing tickets is plain ridiculous.

I agree… But you also need to look at how a law is written. Does the wording state that you cannot shoot after a certain time? Does the law concerning shrimping say you can not shrimp after noon or does it say you can not have poles, bait etc on the water after noon? Either way, I think it is BS, especially if the officer sees you coming to the boat ramp around or at noon, its obivious you are not shrimping.
“Kleenex, The Official Sponsor of Fishb8”
“DNR Law Enforcement Division in Charleston advises baiters not to have bait or poles in a boat that is in the water before noon on Friday, Sept. 13.” Found this quote in an article written back in 2013, other than that I can’t find anything. “advises”…hmmmm
under the shrimping rules on DNR website it says that the season starts at noon, it says nothing about not having poles or bait in the boat before this time. no different than the last day or first of any season. what would be the difference walking to your deer stand on august the 15th 1 hour and 10 minutes before sunrise to make it to the stand 1 hour before. seems to be a made up interpretation for an easy way to write tickets.
It’s printed on the form they send you.

quote:guess I should have said that I have never purchased a license. Guess that is why I have not seen that. You would think it would be written into the actual law regarding shrimp baiting.

From SC Code of Laws:
“It is unlawful during the closed season for taking shrimp over bait to have aboard any boat, any poles, or material that can be used to attract, lure, or cause shrimp to congregate.”
