Limit of Trout

Nothing wrong with keeping a legal limit of fish. Fishing is a huge part of the economy in that part of the country. Pretty sure their DNR and fisheries people know where to set the limits.

“Choose my bluest tape and unlock my car, An honest tune with a lingering lead has taken me this far”

So we’ve stopped to the depths of bashing a fellow angler who keeps a legal limit? That’s where we are? If that state’s wildlife/fisheries agency didn’t think the population could stand it, the limit would be different. As someone else suggested, when/if it gets to that level, the limit will be adjusted accordingly. That’s no different than here in SC when the redfish limit was changed from 3 per person per day to 2. If it’s considered “greedy” to take a legal limit, what’s it considered to judge others that take a legal limit? I think some of you armchair fisheries biologists need to take a breath…or get a clue.

As far as people posting their fishing trips from other states, why can’t they do that? I enjoy catching fish all over this great country but according to some of you, if it’s not caught in SC, people shouldn’t share it with others here. I guess since this site is called “Charleston Fishing,” by that thought process, fish caught anywhere other than Charleston shouldn’t be posted or talked about either, huh? BREAKING NEWS…No one is forced to read posts from other people so if you only want to read about and see pictures of SC fish, do a better job of screening which threads you check out.

Maybe you are right Bangstick, I probably jumped the gun. Mostly because my friends and I always keep some for a meal and released the rest. Never kept more than I could eat that day. My apologizes.

You don’t owe me an apology, Myrtleman. I don’t always take fish home when I go fishing but when I do, I’m not against taking some with the intentions of freezing it for a later meal. I prefer fresh fish but living in Lexington, I catch enough for future meals, if I keep any at all. Sometimes I’ll drag the boat down to Chucktown just for a stretch on the string but I do love me some redfish, trout and flounder. On more than one occasion, I’ve taken a limit of trout and a limit of redfish home. As far as the trout go, we do work off of a self-imposed rule of throwing back any trout over 20". I credit Optiker for that initiative and I gladly follow it.

I don’t know HW personally but I know enough to know he’s not wasting any of the fish he posts pictures of. He’s making use of the resource while adhering to the legal limits. I can’t think of a single reason why any responsible angler would have a problem with that.

That is a rule that I saw on here when I first moved to MB, I thought to my self hey these guys feel the same way I do, and that is something I have always adhered to.,

Good deal! Like I said, people a lot smarter than me came up with that one and I figure if they’re talking, the best thing I could was listen.

I’m working on starting an initiative around the release thing. I’d like a focus group to bounce a few ideas off, if anyone is interested, please send me an email at dfladd@eyestrikefishing.com Just a way to give back to the resource. Not for profit.

Thank you, bangstick. When I started posting on this site 18 years ago, I was mostly fishing the SC coast…from McClellanville to Edisto. As I started fishing other waters, I continued to post here and share stories with friends of mine here. I enjoyed the Venice area so much, I bought a camp down there. I still fish SC, but the fishing in Venice is something special. I’ve had a lot of friends from SC come and fish with me in Venice. They’ve had a great time. As a matter of fact, a friend from SC was just there this past weekend. He had never fished for speckled trout before, but he caught on quickly. I just logged on to this site to post his photo, so I guess I need to post a warning that if a big stringer of trout caught somewhere other than Charleston Harbor offends you, do look at my post. Thanks again.

I know Harold (a little) and he’s a great guy. No shame in catching a legal limit and posting pics of it. When I see those pics, and its pretty much the rule in LA, is what happens to all those fish? If they are being frozen and eventually chucked out - that’s when its wasteful and yeah, I have a problem with that. But, IDK are they sold to restaurants? Given to friends? Again, IDK but I have to believe the majority of those fish are not ultimately consumed. I kept a SC limit once 2 years ago and it fed 5 families at a fish fry. If they are being consumed then I don’t see a problem with it. The DNR will set the limits accordingly.

Fed 5 families on a SC limit with a self imposed “nothing over 20”?
A SC limit is about what I need to feed my family of 5.

Yeah. You must have a bigger appetite than me or anyone I know. One fillet a person is about right. 10 fish = 20 fillets = 20 ppl fed.

1 20" trout I get 4 good size meals out of. Each fillet makes 2 good size pieces.

One fillet isn’t going to cut it for me, Optiker. Granted, I’m not quite as slim and trim as you either so I believe there’s a direct correlation. LOL!!

Yeah but he does just like me (I should say, I do just like him) and throws back any trout over 20" so when/if either of us keep fish, we’re keeping the same size class.

My point is, 10 trout under 20" (say averaging 17") is a lot of meat. 50 or 75 is a LOT of meat, I just wonder how much of that is being consumed or being wasted. If its being consumed, I have no problem with it as long as its a legal limit.
