I have squall II 60OLDs I troll anywhere from 4:00 to six of them at a time I target several different types of fish if I was targeting only mahi I would stick to 30 to 40 lb test but I target tuna and other pelagic so I have Spooled mine with 80 lb braid approximately 400 yd and top shot it with 80 lb mono approximately 100 to 150 yd depending on my troll speed and my target for the day I will normally put on a Yo-zuri HD Carbon Pink fluoro leader approximately 5 ft 6 ft and then if I’m going to be worried about bite offs I will use a 12-in metal leader after that if I’m worried at slower speeds I’d use a single strand wire but my deep diving plugs I will use a seven strand with crimps and thimbles I always use stainless steel ball bearing swivels at the beginning of my short leader whether it be the 5 ft or the 12 to 18 in liter now I’m fishing in 24 ft Cobia so I’m not targeting wahoo so not worried about those as much this is my first year being out trolling so I haven’t had the opportunity to have a whole lot go wrong other than tangles I will say that they happen quite often I did have a mahi take and tangle up one of my 60 LDs to a loss of half my cap. I’ve lost a 60 LD overboard from a King Mackerel at 30.00 for rod leash , I made my own since 20 of them for 30.00 and they are twice as strong. fishing no matter what you do when you fish it’s always going to be a trial and error situation what works for one person might not work for you and what works for you won’t work for somebody else I troll at 8 knots and I get a lot of king action I use two types of lures mostly and that is the rapala 40 and 30s and I use the Yo-zuri Bonita’s on the surface I will use C&h rattle jets or I also make a lot of my own daisy chains now with 4-inch skirts and nine and a half inch skirts my 9 and 1/2-in skirt is always done on a multi-strand cable and it is the only thing on the cable as I run away three-way swivel off the front and then my shorter strand will have six 4-in skirts that I use beads inside to make a rattle sound and to make bubbles where my 9 and 1/2 lure I will run a 8 oz weight in to keep it lower and the water and longer than the teaser chain I am also trying a new one here recently I hear tomorrow not tomorrow but on the 13th that will be my own version of like a spreader bar made with the believe it or not drinking straws however the terminal tactical I use I use a lot of doctor fish for my ball bearing swivels and my swivel clamps as I found that Dr fish is got a great price and always every time I’ve tested test 150% of its posted test so I believe Dr fish is probably the best brand because I can pay $20 and get 60 swivels are pay $40 and get 60 swivel clamps. I use AFW for all my wire and all my mono or braid is all Yo-zuri. Yo-zuri is my #1 go-to on everything but that’s only because I do tournaments now and Yo-zuri is one of my potential backers coming into next year I did say that I started trolling this year for the first time That’s a little bit misleading I’ve been fishing for over 40 years now I just recently switched from Gulf of Mexico from the Gulf shores and Pensacola area over now I am fishing between the St Mary’s River and down to Hillsboro inlet area I was asked to go to North Carolina this year for the end of Kings season but did not go again this is what I use there’s lots of different thoughts and opinions but I run my Bonita that is running in my shotgun line back at the back on the surface the deep dive plugs like I said it’s going to be my middle two lines and then I’ll run my own daisy chains on the surface on the wide lines I made my own sidetracking planers that are tied to cleats I’ve made my own downrigger and made my own outriggers I do not pay the high prices for a lot of this ridiculous stuff because you can buy just as good quality stuff for a lot less price but be careful there is a lot of bad quality stuff out there such as Amy sport or sport Amy something like that their stuff never goes to test but there are people like I said Dr fish that are trying to make a good name for themselves and produce a good quality product to compete with the top line stuff. I retired My handyman business and painting company to fish full time now and doing so I still loved painting so I am now doing a lot of my own hard baits and painting them especially painting a lot of my jigs as I can do them a lot cheaper than buying them and I’ve got some really awesome designs that I am working on getting the patent on especially for some deep diving plugs and also some sidetracking boards that I think are going to be a big game changer and put a big big dent into a certain market out there and bring a whole new market to life. I troll inshore and offshore offshore I have 4 Penn sqII60ld and 4 Shimano TLD25. Have 2 Penn senator 3/0 two Penn 150 and Penn long beach 327 as backup normally two TLD 25 and 4 Penn at a time if I had 6 Penn sqII60lds Id use the Shimano as back up. Inshore I run spinFisher 5000 trolling. Penn fierce 4000 bottom. For hard baits and jigging abu Garcia Max Pro 2500 or Shimano Nasci 2509hg with Penn wraths and Shimano Sedona as backups. Everything is lined with Yo-zuri T7. 10-30lb
