Skint-nee,don’t get so fired up so early in the morning…I know you are not a morning person.
one answer for the lion fish is simple, but difficult to enforce. If aquariums would stop selling lions, and in turn buyers not releasing them into the wild, that would be a giant step.

Will you at least agree that the SAFMC has been planning large closures for 12+ years? ![]()
If I talked in front of large audiences about killing my neighbor from 1992-2008 and suddenly did so in 2009 out of “self-defense”, how do you think my trial would go?
about as good as the closure…
who really knows…area 51 had a NOAA vessel in, around, on top of,etc.I thought it was an all SCDNR project.Maybe some of the data collected played a part in the upcoming closure?
We are so far past the point of infestation by loinfish, that it really does not matter if people release them or not. I hope they don’t but it does not matter. They are COVER ALL bottom that is deeper than 100ft. There are ledges inshore of the Hole that are barren to all other fish except for the loinfish and AJs. It would be silly to think that these fish are having NOT an impact on the fishery.

Anyway, Area 51 doesn’t do anything more than prove what we already know… That “secret spots” produce the best catches. That’s why people don’t like to share their favorite spots. If you pound a spot very hard, like our artificial reefs, then you don’t even give them a chance to build up fish. If you let a spot rest and are a good steward of that spot, then it will consistenly produce. I fish my favorite spots the absolute least. And when I do hit them I am always impressed by them. This is not exactly a new concept to wildlife management.
This isn’t rocket science! I will ask my 5 year old nephew tomorrow which he would rather have, a fishing spot that everyone knows about or his own secret spot…
I’m pretty sure that everyone understands that too much pressure on a given resource can deplete it…
Bolbie, you raise another one of my long term arguments to the tip of the iceberg here… I’m a long term advocate of a private artificial reef program like the one in Alabama. Why have 1 Area 51, when you can have 20,000 of them that are paid for 100% by the public?
Let’s take fishing pressure out of the equation for a second… Let’s say that regulations were left exactly the same as they are now. No closures, no changes… Do you think 20,000 new Area 51’s would help?
If so, then you now understand where I am coming from…
And I thought Area 51, was a not-so-secret government installation is the SW American desert where remains of extraterrrestial beings were kept and studied by the US Gov’t.
I’m so confused!!??
How about we all go out and load up on all the lionfish we can and dump em all off on the steps of SAMFC!

so lets kill them all… the lionfish that is, not the SAFMC folks. I was in LowCountry Dive shop and saw the discount posted. my plan was to stick em with a paralzyer then just shake them off and let em swim off to die. Guess i gotta get a thick bag and stuff them in that to get the discount. I’ll get all my boys to start killing them now. and bolbie there are a ton more lionfish down there than grouper. a bunch more… and the grouper sticking is done with for now so… kill the lionfish… if you catch one on a hook do us all a favor and stick you filet knife thru him prior to cutting the line.
SAVE A SNAPPER, KILL A LIONFISH

Ever think that some people just shouldnt be on the water, but hey its funny for the rest of us!
Hey Guys, I did a dive last wednesday, some live bottom in 100’ and the Comanche Wreck. Vis was around 30’, bottom temp was 64. Ran on a sweet ride, and soon to be charter dive boat for www.Lowcountryscuba.com, called “Chaos.” The grouper were thick in the live-bottom, and my buddy Nate snagged 5 slippy lobsters, I failed the boat, too p**** I wasn’t slaying grouper. I saw at least 15 Lionfish that kept me from pursuing enough dark holes in the ledge. I killed every Lionfish I saw, and I know I hardly scrached the surface. Comanche was the same story, there were Lionfish on an artificial reef! Thats bad news for anyone that likes salt on their lips. My dive partner and friend Nate, in cooperation with Lowcountry Scuba, are running a “Lionfish Spearfishing Summer Slam,” to help give our reef systems some much needed backup, and give Lionfish the predator they HAVE to fear. This will be a 4 month, interstate tournament (dive shops are monthly weigh in stations), divers from FL, GA, SC, and NC will compete simply by a 1 point per fish, with an extra point awarded if the fish is over 12" (FL) system. The final “weigh” in AND COOK OUT will be here in Charleston, and attendees will receive double points for their final weigh in. As we work to make the website for this tourney, we will operate out of a facebook group. I will do my best to keep us updated here if there is interest, but here is the link, please join the group, the more support we have now, the more sponsors are willing to make the winnings top of the line products, $$, ect:http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mount-Pleasant-SC/Eat-the-Lionfish/283248658354/
Lets make this happen! The worst case scenario is we do some some awesome diving and Lionfish continue to ravage our fragile bottom, best case scenario we become the much needed U/W predator our grouper need to help them out compete Lionfish all together, and STILL do some awesome diving! We’ll keep you updated.
Thanks,
Vic + Nate
Hey guys, I am putting together the website for the Lionfish Summer Slam, and I need as many pictures of Lionfish you guys have, if your willing to share them! Anything will be helpful, if you want to send e-mail them to me at lionfishsummerslam@gmail.com that would be awesome. Credit will be given, and this page is going to get hit hard. Also, I am trying to plan a dive for this weekend on a nice winterized ride if anyone is interested, I have 2 people, including myself, and I need 3 or 4 more. If we get 4 people it will be $125.00 per person, were doing three dives, and all i want is Lionfish and lobster. Give me a call (610-620-4146 (T/R) or 843-884-1500 (M-W-F)) if you want to get on board, were going Fri, Sat, or Sunday, which ever looks the friendliest come Thursday night at 9:00pm. Leaving Shem creek public ramp at 8:00, meeting at the dive shop at 7:20 to load the boat. I’ll bring drinks and snacks. Bring your lobster gloves…
I understand they are very good to eat when cared for properly. From what Im told they need to placed in a rock salt cold water brine which deactivates the poison in their spines. Then clean them like any other fish.
Maybe as your killin them youll find them to be quite tasty and useful for adding to the pot. Just be careful when bagging them and returning to the surface.
What is the best way to kill them? They just sit there so a long Ice Pick or a gig would be an easy way to get more than using a speargun. They are pretty tough too. I tried just poking a few with a tri-tip and it wasn’t easy. Some of the ones I saw in The Gardens area were big enough to eat. Not sure I’d ruin my day trying to harvest them for eats when I gotta make the best of my trip down from Gamecock headquarters.

Id say use a Hawaiian Sling with a 4 shaft spine. Pin it to the bottom, stick your blade in its head. I agree, though you better have a good bag and beetter have it hanging below you when your coming up.
It all works, I took the flopper off one of my spare shafts and use it to poke through them, then i just slide them off into a Deepsee lobster bag that has no holes, and seals up automatically with Velcro. I don’t even need to touch them till I fillet and eat them. Kevin B, the guy who owns www.slinginsteel.com just invented their RX-5. It has a barb-less, 5" kill spike that is under the barrel opening on the tip of the gun, that HAS to be the best way to kill these fish, then you still have full use of the gun for putting down flounder, hogfish, ect.
