Nice Work!

Johns Island, SC

We were just a few miles north of it on the ledge. Water was 72.5 all day. We found 71 degree water in 125’ about 8 miles short of the ledge. We trolled along side, across and against only 1 other boat all day until we were about done around 1pm when another boat showed up. The other boat had a “bird” I guess is what it’s called on their long line making a lot of disturbance on top the water. They seemed to be trolling a lot faster than us. We trolled at an average speed of 8mph enough to bounce and dive the sea witches. We didn’t know how fast we were supposed to go so we just made sure our baits bounced. We were surprised to have no dolphin action trolling. We didn’t see much life on top either. No real flying fish etc. I had the bottom locked 30-40’ and marked a lot on the bottom up 30-40’.

Water was 72.5 and we saw another boat most of the morning making the same passes we did and they had steady bent rods as well.

Good job on first trip. What was water temp.? I know some rookies that THINK they went to EB yesterday and said all they saw was 71• water and not another boat all day. They got blanked.

FB2. We were in that other boat you saw. Great report and looked like y’all were doing everything right from our view! Way to break in the new ride!

Awesome report, taking home 9-10 different species is quality work. That also looks like a pretty good sized triggerfish mixed in there.

P.S… Y’all needed to head out a little deeper for the dolphin

Hey toothy how did y’all end up doing.

Thanks for the video…The water looks beautiful, roughly how far out was this??? I must have missed that in the post here…Sorry. Congrats on the great day…Jim.

Agreed on the cable. I pulled a large Bonito on #9 wire one day…about half the day, then the wire let go. The vibrating bait will wear streaght through single strand.

Lots of good teat marks on that plug. They do get a lot of attention. I like it when teat break off and get stuck in the plug.

We were on the Ledge Capt Jim. Toothy, I’m also interested in how y’all did. Y’all seemed to stay bent the whole time. Sorry if we cut too close at times had my buddy with shoulder issue on the wheel and felt we got close a couple times but between re-rigging and setting lines I was really occupied. 40inchreds did a jam up job helping me set up. By the way, to those who said I need 30,40,50 baits already rigged so when the bite is hot I’m not tied up rigging a new ballyhoo, I’ll tell you it didn’t seem to affect us as all. I didn’t start rigging bait due to driving til we got to where we wanted to start so I rigged and set out lines to start 1 by 1. Normally I won’t do that. But we only used 6 of Capt Ed rigs all day. Just due to one got frayed bout half way through the mono. With his rigs it took less than a minute to go from getting the ballyhoo from the pack til the line was in the water. The rubber bands seem to take longer than the springs to wrap up but once I got w good hang of exactly how I wanted to do it it wasn’t too bad. Now I have misplaced the bag of extras so that wasn’t any fun. I went through the eyeballs to start but soon I realized it was easier and got better bait performance by not going through eye balls first and got a better sinker position under the chin. Thanks for all the kind words. We had a blast and I can’t wait to go again. I’m officially hooked and would much rather do that than bottom fish now.

I didn’t have any nor could I find any cable Monday in Columbia. I only had 67# wire but 40IR had 95# wire so we rolled with that. Also a reason we went with smaller Yozuri to be safer.

Nice work man!!

Glad you guys got out there and had a good day. It’s still early in the season yet; you will have better days if you keep at it. Fishing is like any other activity in life, everyone has an opinion on how to do it. None of them are perfect and you’ll be just that much more efficient next trip out. Keep using the plugs, they work well at times. Plugs on the ledge on a full moon is wahoo time. Know that.

6 knots is the standard trolling speed, but feel free to vary it depending on conditions. Some days a little slower works best and some days they like it a little faster, but you usually can’t go wrong at 6 knots. Much faster than that and your ballyhoo tend to get washed out and not last too long.

That boat should have insulated fish boxes; use them!

Whoever told you you needed fifty baits rigged on a 25cc doesn’t fish a 25cc often. There’s nothing wrong with the way you are doing things. Don’t second guess yourself and keep at it. You’ll be able to outfish a bunch of these guys in a year or two if not already!

May all your favorite bands stay together…

Nice catch!

Wanna mention, if you pull in a blackfin free lining, good time to drop a jig. He may have company.

Thanks DoubleN. 23SF, I’ll definitely be rigged and ready next trip and I don’t see an issue with having 10 ready so you can just unsnap and snap a new leader however if you have 10 different color rigs then I feel like a hot color is better. Yesterday there wasn’t a hot color. Every Capt Ed rig got hit. I think the wahoo turned my white and blue to a permanent pink and blue!
