I just bought the Ulterra 80#/24V with 60" shaft. You will love it! It is amazing and I haven’t really figured it all out yet. It holds my 19’ bay boat easily in the ripping current at wappoo cut. I used mine a couple Saturday’s ago from 9am-3pm and a couple hours the next day. My older batteries (2011) were still 3/4 charged. That was basically just using the spot lock feature the whole time. Best thing I have purchased in a long time!
I’ve noticed a lot of the ipilot units purchased are a little older. The ones released at the end of '16 are not the same units as the ones being talked about. Minn Kota acknowledged spot-lock accuracy issues so they redesigned that feature. The “spot-lock” feature is more accurate now because of changes made with internal GPS. http://www.minnkotamotors.com/Product/Spot-Lock/
Personally, if you have room for a 24v system, I’d go with an 80lb thrust motor. Yes, the 80lb may be a little overkill for a 17’ boat but is there a such thing as too much power?
No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.
ON A 17 FOOT BOAT, THE 80# WILL DRAG IT AROUND WITH LITTLE EFFORT.

MK RIPTIDE ULTERRA on my Scout 201. I love it! Two huge reasons I can self launch in lakes ( cheaper than a divorce getting my wife to help) and I can finally flyfish without having to constantly adjust the tiller / speed etc when I set the course and go. It’s awesome. Yes ,'expensive but the technology is incredible.

MK, it’s important to know if you go to the Minn Kota website to look at these, you’re going to see MSRP quoted. That’s rarely, if ever, the price you’ll actually pay if you buy from a Minn Kota dealer. If said dealer IS selling for MSRP, go somewhere else because they’ve officially lost their mind.

I find myself in a similar situation. Last fall I purchased the single battery ipilot for my 18’ CC. I found it was very under powered and consequently needed to run it at full power to achieve the results I desired. After that experience I figured a 2 battery ipilot would do a better job. I returned the original and have been waiting to purchase a new motor this spring. Have you pulled the trigger on your ipilot? I would be very interested in hearing what you got and who you got it from. Thanks

The “spot lock” feature is FAR more accurate in the new models. I’m talking night and day more accurate. If you’ve ever complained about your spot lock feature then yes, I’d say it’s worth upgrading.
