My Garden Today

What is the name of the heirloom tomato? It sure looks good in the picture. I’m growing several different varieties, some newer ones and a few heirlooms. I don’t try to save most tomato seeds because of probable cross pollination in a small garden spot.
I do save white half runner bean seeds that my grandfather grew in his garden. Also save a willow leaf climbing lima bean that my in-laws have grown for many years. The limas can grow to the top of my 13’ high garden fence.

The tomatoes must have some kind of roma in them, thats just a guess because of the shape and the tail, but theyve been in my garden for so long I dont recall where they came from.

I know a little about limas and butter beans

Hey EF, about 1000 klicks N the pole bean must have is a Dr. Martin ever heard of them?

My poppop was a pole bean dude, real sapling poles he’d cut a spear in the big end with a hatchet on a block, tied baling twine from top to top, tie runners with torn rags ribbons.

I sure miss him.

I heard of them, sure. Martin pole limas were all the rage back in the carter mondale days for me.

Lots of people made pole tents back then, good stuff. Easy picking too

I think I’ll pull the peanuts this weekend, looks like they are mature enough. Gonna put some collards, kale, and turnips in their place. Hoping to get some squash and butter peas before frost it they don’t drown.

How many pnuts did you grow?

Rough guessing I’d say about a bushel.

Break for lunch. We will probably have 6-8 gallons of strained juice ready to process and everything cleaned up by supper.

Fingers crossed.

Man you get a lot of good stuff out of that garden. But it looks like about a full-time job.

Its a job for sure, and the pay sux,but i got myself an awesome boss

…well that and 10 gallons of freshly squeezed juice.

Here is whats left out of 25 gallons

Its what I do after spending decades running a crew of men and eating roadhouse burgers off my tailgate.

Really

So at least you got something to look forward to, right?

Its good work if you can get it

Pretty much the extent of my gardening is a couple tomato plants and maybe a :bell_pepper: :hot_pepper: in a pot.
Growing up our garden was nearly 2 acres no exaggeration. I pulled all the weeds shelled all the peas, husked/cut all the corn &&& that I care too.
And also having to help with all the canning and putting up for the freeze.
Not complaining very happy the way I was brought up.
Having a garden really ain’t my thing.
I do get kind of envious sometimes when I see the big piles of y’all’s fresh veggies.
But I don’t enjoy the work enough for the reward.
And we usually get a good bit of fresh veggies from one of the guys at work.
And then in the fall I’ll bring him trout and big mullet. He smokes mullet.

No, youd better hand those over to @barbawang asap.

Nice find, they should be around everywhere down there now after all the rain and humidity

Have you prepared them before?

These are the two tomatoes and three ears of corn ive been looking for

The very last ones this year

No sir. Do tell!

I have something similar to these in my backyard. Squirrels pull them up and eat them

Those are shitakes, they dont grow on the ground, they have to be “planted” in hardwood.

The ones in your yard are likely milkies and not fit for human consumption

I specialize in growing fun sized pumpkins…

But I did manage one watermelon for myself. The deer are off eating something else now.
