As hard as it is for me to get down to Charleston to fish, I may have to hit up some of you Columbia fellows and check out these rivers y’all keep talking about.

Once you try it, you’ll be giving yourself a well deserved kick in in ass for waiting so long. Rainbow and brown trout, smallies and stripers within minutes of downtown.
Normally you can catch trout (bows and brownies) under and just above the Gervais St bridge in January and February. The recent rains/flooding has that on lock down right now though.
As the water warms and the stripers return, the trout retreat back up the Saluda towards the dam. Trout in the Saluda are considered striper candy.
No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.
in my experience, columbia is a world class city for striper fishing, prob trout too. i think people don’t realize how much credit to give it. when the striper run, i can leave work at 5, wade for a min and catch all evening. only CITY i know that could compete w/ that is austin w/ black bass, and even there you have to kayak. as for keeping, know the limits. rarely see keepers based on the size and date regulations. if im on down the congaree camping ill keep one, bread and fry and dunk in some soy sauce. but i suspect there’s too many irresponsible/unlicensed people taking fish out of the lower saluda/convergence that they shouldnt for responsible anglers to do the same. i’ve got plenty of thoughts about how to wade but ill save that for another time.

Another helpful hint on wading the rivers.Get yourself a quality retractable wading staff. My balance ain’t what it use to be.Mine has saved me many times from taking a hard fall on the rocks or getting water in my waders early in the year.
x2 on the wading stick^ I wade these rivers 300 days a year. get a nice stout piece of bamboo and hack it to 5’ long, and add some paracord to tie it to yourself. Then you can just drop it in the water while you cast and retreive it later.
No matter how many variables I have control over, I never expect a bite. I only hope.
For stripers and smallmouth I carry a variety of shallow running minnows and topwater poppers. 5-6" for the stripers and 2-4" for smallies, Large Panther martins and Bett’s Spin Jigs work well too.

Listen guys, roddy took me wading in the river in Columbia, I have fished from the outer banks to the Bahamas and the afternoon we spent on the river was one of the finest times I have had catching fish. We caught smallies, largemouth, and stripers on topwater. and I mean nice stripers. If he invites you run don’t walk.
My personal favorite for smallies is a Stanley wedge plus spinnerbait.I can work it fast, slow, buzz it,and cover a lot of water. For strictly topwater,it’s hard to beat a STORM rattlin’chug bug.Stripers will also hit these, and on light gear, that’s a fun ride!
