There isn’t a Leupold scope on the market worth 1k. I have a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x56 NPR-2 reticle on my 6.5 creedmoor and my 13 year old neighbor wears the deer out with that gun, I can promise you the reticle isn’t too complicated. My next purchase will be a SHV F1 4-14x50 MOAR reticle to put on a 300 something. Saltydog has the SHV f1 and Im sure he will be along shortly to talk about it. I also didn’t mention the Kahles Helia 3-12x56 which is probably the best light gathering scope ever made if you just want a #4 reticle hunting scope, but yet again, you have to pay to play.
Never said you couldn’t kill a deer with one. Just said they’re more of a tactical or LR scope, not a traditional hunting scope. Just my opinion, which you don’t have to agree with. Totally agree you get what you pay for but the perfect scope is one that does what you want it to do, the way you want it to do it, regardless of price or name on the side. I have a lot of friends that use what I would consider inferior products, but they have total confidence in them and they kill deer every season with them so who am I to say they’re using the “wrong” scope?
Scopes are fickle. I think they are both under-stated and over-thought.
In the future, where every stranger poses a potential threat, knowing the predator mindset is the only safe haven.
One of those Chuckhawks articles I posted pretty much lays out the same case. I think Salty just don’t like Leupold for some reason…Chevy vs. Ford stuff. I will own a very “top end” scope one day, and I can guarantee no teenagers will be putting their hands on it. That is especially true for neighbors. If I end up with around $6000 in a rifle and optics, I probably won’t even let another grown man touch it. That way, if something happens, I’m the only one to blame for damage to such an expensive piece of equipment.

It’s not a ford/chevy thing, it’s a ford/chevy vs Kia thing. Of all the things hunters spend their hard earned money on they usually get cheap when it’s time to buy a quality optic. I don’t want my equipment to be a limiting factor. I’ve owned leupolds, they were ok, but for the money there are better options in my opinion.
Do this to most brands and it will probably sound like a coke can full of rocks when your done. I’ve looked through an Nxs side by side with a vortex viper, leupold vx3, trijicon, and kahles and the sharpest was the kahles but only slightly. Nightforce was better than leupold and vortex by far and I liked the adjustability, zerostop and illumination of the NF better than the trijicon so that’s which way I went. I will be adding another very soon. https://vimeo.com/109698139
There is one thing to be said for a NF, you can take it off, bludgeon someone to death with it, club baby seals or drive fence posts, then put it back on and shoot the X ring all day.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

currenly have a Leupold Vari-X iii 3.5x10x50 on my rifile, and have been using it for almost 15 years now. Looking to upgrade to something that brings in a little more light and can zoom in a little more.
Looking for some suggestions from everyone here on the board.

My dad and I the same scope as you. Got them about 15 years ago. Last year he got his wife a cheap scope (Nikon I believe) somewhere in the $200-400 range. They fight over it now. It has a parallax dial that has significantly improved their image quality. The first time I tried it was before I got glasses but I needed them and it could produce a good image for me.
Don’t know what it looks like in low light but I haven’t heard any complaints.

185 yard shot in low light. Seems to have worked perfectly.
140 yard shot in normal lighting. Seems to have worked perfectly.
146 yard shot in normal light. Dang, that VX6 is still holding its zero. maybe, I should check it on a farther target.
293 yard shot. Seems it is still working just fine.
Two at 252 yards, one at 200 yards, and the hog shot in da face at 129 yards. These were on ADQP tags. Read the regs before you start saying I did something illegal (No daily bag limit on ADQP tags).
225 yards in low light. Buck dropped like a turd from a tall ox.
I’ve been shooting a Remington model 660 .308 for the past 15 or 16 years. Love the rifle, and no need to get something else. Just wanting a new scope.
Here is my opinion for what its worth on scopes…Is a 3-4 thousand dollar Zeiss, Nightforce or Schmidt Bender better than a 1 thousand dollar Leupold? Yes it is. Is it 3 or 4 times better? I doubt it. I say this because I own a couple of the NXS, Zeiss Diavari, and several Leupolds. Just bought one of their Mark 6 scopes and an Armasight Thermal…good glass with a large objective lens will bring in more light. Spend as much as you can afford on good glass and a great rifle. They all have to come together when that time comes…

X2, and the very point Archer and I are making. Get the best you can afford. And, No! It does not have to be a Leupold. Many of the scope manufacturers are making really good hunting scopes these days. Heck, even Bushnell is making some “good” scopes these days.

Most of the scopes both of the Salty’s are talking about would be way “over scoped” for that rifle. It will certainly send a bullet 1000 yards, but it is not going to do it as efficiently or accurately as a long heavy barreled rifle. So, as Archer and I were saying, a good hunting scope would probably be best for that rifle. No need for 1000 plus yards of adjustability in elevation or windage. The Chuckhawks article I posted is a good read for recommended hunting scopes so you can decide for yourself which fits your needs. Good luck. Hope you find one that fits your needs. Oh, Merry Christmas, too!!!

What 1000yd scope am I suggesting? I’m saying a 2.5X10X56 Trijicon Accupoint with an Amber BAC is about as good as it gets without breaking the bank. That’s a $750 hunting optic and blows the doors off a Leupold VX6. Same with the 5X20X50 Trijicon Accupoint and same reticle. If you want to step it up, get a Kahles Helia with a #4 or #1 reticle. Also in that price range are the Meopta Meostar R1’s. you can also find the Leica ER5 and Swaro Z3’s. all vastly superior to the Leupold VX6 and less money depending on the model. Quality and clarity of glass trumps magnification and in falling light most eyes cannot process more than 7X magnification anyway.
As to Chuckhawk’s reviews, take them with a grain of salt. He gets paid by manufacturers to do write ups on certain products to boost sales. There are more independent resources who give honest and thorough assessments of these products out there. Opticstalk by SWFA has a ton of good information as does Opticsthoughts, a blog by one of the members and an optics guru.
Everyone has to make their own choices. Some pick based on a name or because
If I posted every deer we’ve shot with the creedmoor/NF the past 2 seasons I’d break the internet. You can pick up a trijicon, ziess, nf nxs and several others for the same money as a vx6, you can go meopta and NF Shv for less. Too each is own but don’t go throwing out prices on scopes that aren’t true to try and validate your point.
My go to field gun is a plain old Savage model 11 with a 22" mid weight bull barrel, Timney trigger, 20 moa egw rail, Burris extreme tactical low rings, cerekoted, 5.5-22x56 NXS.
At the end of the day it doesn’t matter my preference, the op needs to go look through every scope he can from 200$-2k$ and pick whatever feels/looks the best through our eyes and falls in your budget. Good luck and merry Christmas!

You need to swap that factory stock out. A Timney makes all the difference in the world to the way a Savage feels and shoots.

I’ve got a b&c m40 for it. Bedding block needed a little work and my hunting buddy wasn’t shooting it as well with the bigger palm swell so I dropped in the factory stock for this season.
