new vs older motors

I feel the opposite. A couple of early 90’s motors and several thousand later. My 06 Verado has run 900hrs with no trouble. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s experienced this with the newer engines. The new motors need to run. The worst thing you can do with any of them, new or old, is let em sit.

I love this thread. I’ve owned about a million different outboards over the years, and I’ve got fond memories of them all. I’ll admit that I’m a 4 stroke convert but I’ve got a special place in my heart for the old 2 strokes and poboy nailed with his comment about backing through through the smoke. It’s like catching that wiff of pipe tobacco smoke that reminds me of my grandfather.

Newest outboard i ever had was a 1996, so i have no idea about any of this… I can find the spark plugs on a old motor.
Pull the cover off a 4 stroke and think i am looking at a space ship.

We have a 23’ Robolo at the shop, with twin '78 140 hp Evinrides,(yes Evinrides) I’d rather be 50 miles out knowing what I have,(dependable power) than to guess! My Step-Dad has an '05 Merc. 150, with so many bells, and whistles, we can’t even figure out which alarm is going off when!! Been back to the dealer several times, They can’t figure it out either???

exactly! I would much rather be offshore with my motor…knowing how it runs, knowing what it likes and doesn’t like. A new set up would have bugs to work out, regardless of make, most of the time and wouldn’t feel comfortable with that. The gremlins that were in my motor are dead and gone

My old Mercs run great… but i would still rather be offshore w/ new motors.
I can pretty much fix anything on my engines with a hammer and a screw driver…:face_with_head_bandage:
new ones you need a degree from MIT to get the cowling off.

huhhhh? This isn't you is it Captain?? How 'bout 30 year old motors???? They're still screamin' deamons!!

lucky i guess but i’ve run the same merc for 18 yrs. never failed to start once. tower of power. i have a 350 mag in my hardtop and i regret to say while i love it, it has let me down twice in the 2 yrs i’ve owned it. bad dist pickup once, bad starter the second. my merc 1500 while way less efficient is as reliable as anything built today for sure. and i agree with poboy nothin replaces that smell!
