New Wording in Shrimp Baiting Regs???

At Buckhall landing opening day you will be ticketed (or at least has been this way) if you are tied up to the dock with poles or bait in your boat. Seems a little rediculous but…

thats where I heard it happened

I was ticketed several years ago in BB for having poles and bait in the boat before noon on opening day, but later had the charges dropped. I guess it makes sense, to DNR at least, to have lots of boats racing away from Buck Hall at the same time to reach their favorite spot.

Yes - i do not shrimp out of a large boat - 17 ft war eagle. It can get pretty dicy with about 5 24 ft bay boats behind you in a narrow creek.

I’ve got another technicality to add to the mix. The season starts at noon on the 14th. Does that mean you can’t throw a net until noon or you can’t even have your poles in the water until noon. I’m just looking at the tide tables and thinking…

A friend of mine contacted the head of law enforcement for our division, and this is what he had to say about having poles in your boat before noon on Friday the 14th. Very clear. Don’t want anybody to get in trouble.

“SC Statute does not allow the possession of any Shrimp baiting equipment while on the waters prior to the opening or after the closing of shrimp baiting season. You may not be on the water with poles, bait or any other equipment related to or used for shrimp baiting prior to noon opening day.”

I got a ticket last year $110, 15 minutes to 12 noon for poles and bait in the boat.:frowning_face::frowning_face:

We use 1 quart or gallon bags. we head the shrimp on the water, when we get the limit we quit. No court is going to convict you using this method.

I will just say this. The idea of not allowing anyone to have poles or bait in the boat prior to noon on opening day would be like the local police writting tickets for folks who have just purchased beer but not drinking it and charging them with DUI. It makes no sense at all… just saying.

I wish I was the guy my dog thought I was.

I noticed on the sheet they sent with the tags that it has the statement about no poles, bait, etc. on the water prior to noon.

a lot of discussion about a simple rule… No bait/poles on the water before noon is pretty cut and dry. I agree it’s kind of a jack@ss move for DNR to be ticketing people at the ramp, but the season has to start and stop at some definite time, and that’s an easy condition to enforce.

I’m pretty excited about the season starting, but as far as I’m concerned, there will still be just as many shrimp to catch whether I start at 12:01 (or 1 pm, or 10 pm, or the next day, or next week…) or 11:59. Be safe out there!

So here is another can of worms for you…lets say i take out my party barge with myself (license, bait and poles in hand), and three friends, one from in state with a recreational salt water license, another from in state with a cooler of beer and no license, and the third who is visiting from England who just brings dinner. Who can help me catch shrimp and is heading them considered “helping”?

anybody from out of state cannot touch the net…they can do anything else…unless they buy the $500 out of state shrimping license then they can also throw the net…and your shrimp baiting license covers you and anybody else from SC with the net, beer drinking, heading, laughing at your pancakes, etc…

Bonz that works for me but does dnr interpret…“may be assisted by a resident” to mean one or more residents?

don’t know Bo, I think you should call them…don’t go by anything I have said here…DNR knows where I live :))

Bonz i just got off the phone with them. Confirmed that non residents can help with anything but tossing the net and you can have as many residents as you can fit on your boat all tossing nets at the same time ! Sounds like i need to go one poling in a dragon boat!
