The idea that your baitwell needs to be round is complete nonsense. If your bait is rednosing in the corners, the water is low in oxygen, too warm, or ammonia-saturated. Most bait boats and dealers use square tanks.

Here are some pics of my home made tank. Made from a 30 gal. drum from Frank’s car wash. I used an old camp sleeping pad for insulation. Like I said, I might have $75 in it, if that. It’s 20" tall & 19" across the tp. I’m guessing I put about 17 Gal. in it when I get bait. Filled to the top, It’s about 20 gal. I usually put in 3-4 dozen herring & they stay lively all day.
Bottom of filter tube.
1st ac filter.
Activated charcoal in wife’s panty hose.
2nd ac filter
Home made wrench for the cap.
And finally, a drain tube.

Dang Mr. Bob, that’s pretty snazzy.
2006 23 SeaCraft, 2008 Suzuki 250.
I need to brag on my tank just a little.
I got about 3 doz. herring (and their water & salt, Lawcrusher:wink:) from Better Bait at 5am this morning. I’m not really sure how many I had, because they always throw in a few extra.
Anyways, I fished till about 9:30 & called it quits after not one single bite all morning. Went home, unhooked the boat (I left the tank running) and proceeded to do some errands. Around 2pm, I decided I’d better empty & clean the tank and freeze what ever bait was left. I opened the lid and not a single dead bait. At least 1 1/2 doz. still alive and frisky. That’s 9 hours in the tank, in the heat of the day. Not bad. I cleaned the filters once when I was on the lake & no water changes.
I’m very “happy” with my $75.00 tank.
