Nutria Sighting

Are you guys sure you weren't seeing a mink?

Mink are much smaller than nutria. We’ve always had a lot of mink around.

I hit an Otter in Summerville once! I thought at first it was a cat, it was so big. Went back and looked at it and was surprised how big it was!

I’ve seen mink in Awendaw in salt and fresh water.
Seen beaver sign there too.

No nutria though.

Yea there’s no coyotes here just 50# foxes.

Nutria bounty in Louisiana was 5$ per tail…Nutria nutrition (see photo)

Where is molasses creek? Yes Easy you can eat them. Grew up hunting them in Alabama. We fried them but other people made stew as well. As far as being around here I was told by DNR they were down around the Savannah Ga area, up near Clemson and over in the Horry area. I wouldn’t mind shooting a couple. Yes you have to have a hunting license incase any body wonders about that.

Hanging out on the dock in Molasses Creek yesterday and saw this animal that we could not identify at first. Then realized that it was a Nutria. Contacted DNR and they explained that it was an invasive species to SC and the only other sighting was in Horry County.

If you have seen one or think you saw one, add it on to this thread. Just curious if anyone else has run into it. It looks like a cross between a river rat and an otter. But obvious that it was neither.

Saw one swimming away from the Charleston Country Club a few years ago during a 7.0 tide. Contacted local DNR that night and they didn't know what a "nutria" was. If I had any idea it was in fact a nutria I would have beat it to death with a boat paddle. I guess I spoke to the wrong DNR guy?

Was it an otter? NO!!!

Was it a mink? NO!!!

Was it a beaver? NO!!!

Was it a rat? NO!!!

etc…

Molasses Creek is the first creek on your right up the wando from the Remleys Point boat landing.

That’s strange BTY, I saw a show on tv about 12 years ago where the were trapping nutria and releasing them in a fenced area with some wolves trying to teach them to hunt for their own food. Called DNR and spoke to a female officer about it. She told me that was up around the Clemson area. Asked if they would trap a few and call me so I could come get them. She asked why and then used the oh &@&$ no on me.

When I talked to DNR recognized the name coypu rather than nutria. I was told as a kid they were a cross between a beaver and muskrat.
