Top out about 65 wide open? They had those geared really low, usually 4.56’s If that’s all you do with it, you’ll be passing it on to your kids when you kick off.

Yep! Shakes like crazy if I try to go that fast too! It only has 55K miles. I think it sat parked in a Motor T lot for most of her life.

I was thinking about trying to change out the gears in the rear end, but I’ve never tried that on a vehicle before. She only has three speeds, so she runs high RPMs around 45MPH. She shifts to third gear around 52 MPH which is really annoying when I’m in a 40 or 45 MPH zone.

I always hated the way the earlier diesels with automatics shifted. Diesels weren’t good for making vacuum so they have a vacuum pump. Lack of vacuum will cause some screwy shifts. I believe on yours the vaccum regulator is on the injection pump and runs back to the modulator on the transmission. If you pull of the tube and see trans fluid replace the modulator (just screws out) look the system over real good for leaks. At idle you should have about 20" of vacuum. There are some good forums on those military trucks with tons of info. It should certainly be shifting sooner. Almost 30 years old and 55K … it still needs breaking in.
