Offshore fishing in a bay boat?

Sadly, Larry passed away earlier this year, in the Spring I believe.

Sorry to hijack, but can someone being me up to speed on Cracker Larry?

Yes, Larry passed away last year. If you did not know him, he was a 2nd generation boat builder with years and years of knowledge. Larry never hesitated to offer advice, guidance or help. I was lucky enough to meet him when he offered to do a minor repair on my boat. I got to see some of his boat building skills first hand and they were beautiful. He had some fantastic stories about his life and was a veteran that served in Vietnam. This place lost a real treasure when he passed.

I just received this from Dori, and she asks that I share it.
Craig:
I wanted to let you know that yesterday morning my son Chris, Larry’s brother Don, his wife Marian, and I went offshore to fulfill Larry’s request of spreading his ashes out at sea. A long time friend and boat captain, Judy Helmey ,took us out . Larry used to fish with her years ago when he had his charter boat. She had many tales of fishing offshore with Larry and the many crazy things that happen when you run a charter business. We had an outgoing tide and a beautiful morning. Larry is now where he always belonged, riding the waves looking for fish. I always said he had salt water in his veins and that he loved the ocean and boating more than anything else with the exception of family. At least that is what I say out loud, but I think boating/fishing came first and family ran a close second!!
I ask that you either share this email with all his boat building friends or simply let them know that he is out there in his favorite place and that the next time y’all go fishing and catch a big one it may be courtesy of a man who did as much as he could with the time that he had on this earth. The only other request I have yet to fulfill is a big party to celebrate Larry’s life . I have not been in a partying mood, so I have put that aside until I feel like I am strong enough. I will let you know when that happens. Love to all,

Dori

What a way to send him out!

Wished I could’ve meet Larry, he sounds like a swell fella. I was inshore yesterday and even fished the end of the south jetty and the water was glass. Surprising enough even with perfect conditions there was a missing boat 30 miles off near Comanche reef. I heard the CG call and try and call the vessel in distress on VHF with no answer. The missing boat even fired off their EPIRB. CG sent a helo and called other boats near by but nobody was able to locate the vessel in distress. Heard the CG call Pon Pon all day until I left around 2pm. Hope fully them find them or figured out what happened. Goes to show how important it is to have your gear in order and working properly.

I’ve taken my 21’ sea pro bay boat out about 12-15 miles on good days but don’t want to go much further than that. The 15 degree dead rise make it a rough ride and the low freeboard don’t give you anything to brace against as the gunnels hit you in the shins. I’ll be looking for a more offshore capable boat in the next year or so to really get out there
