Oyster Reef Building

In response to Skinneej’s query. At present the ACOE is taking comments (actually ended Aug 1)on reissuing its 50 nation wide permits covering various activities. In addition they are adding language to modify two existing NWP’s I believe 13 and 27 to include language allowing for use of “living shorelines” for erosion control. These types of reefs as well as oyster castles and core logs fall under that definition and depending on the outcome from comments received will likely be allowed for use by private sector going forward. SCDNR and Nature Conservancy have done a lot of research demonstrating the effectiveness for this purpose and were instrumental in this language being added to the NWP program.
