Pathetic Trip...Maybe It's Me

I went to the gulf around Slidell last January and got shut out…Now that’s fishing…

quote:
A pathetic trip is when you bust a prop way up in a little creek on a falling tide late in the day, don't get it changed in time, tide goes out, sun goes down, stuck in the mud, bugs come out something terrible, 3 people on the boat have an expensive dinner engagement that they aint going to make, then it starts raining and lightning. And you sit there in the rain until midnight when you have enough water to float again.

Happen to someone you know?

yeah, a few too many specifics to be fabricated. at least entirely

Honestly relieved to hear the skunk happens to even the best of you. But, I still feel I get more than my share of blanks. I study em more than anyone I know and manage to get on the salt about 4 days a month but it seems like some people have the touch and some of us don’t. I talk to guys that go a few times a year and hit the mother lode every time and it drives me nuts. Still not poor mouthing. Grateful for every day that I get out there and home safe. Have come to see catching a few fish as a bonus.

We had an SSWA tourney yesterday, one of our bigger turnouts and only 4 fish were weighed. It was a very tough day of catching. Most boats were skunked. Bosn and I worked our buts off and were fortunate to weigh two marginal fish.

Fish are there though. Just a day where they were turned off big time

JLee. That’s still better luck then one of my buddies. I swear he’s cursed. I had one summer that a group of 6 of us would fish a dock on the ICW in Awendaw and catch spottails in or near the grass or sharks/rays/ladyfish in the channel. The group (basically all rookies) would average about 10 reds, 40 sharks, 5 ladyfish, and 10 rays a day. He used the same bottom rig and the same fresh cut mullet/fingermullet and fished the same spots (just 1 dock) as everyone else and he caught 1 shark and 1 ray total all summer. Right next to him most of the time I caught probably 80 reds, 250 sharks, 90 rays, and 30 lady fish in the same span all while being the cast man for the girls and having to catch and keep fresh the bait.

The girls didn’t know how to cast and still smoked him. I could have caught more fish letting the rod holder set the hook and no he wasn’t just terrible at setting the hook he just never got bites. These reds were 24"-32" and mostly set the hook themselves.
