Perch Fishin

I prefer baitcasting reels, simply because they seem to ignore the line twist that invariably comes along with fishing the spoons. Any type of line will do, but I prefer fluorocarbon because it stretches less than mono and gives a better hookset in deeper water. I also use medium heavy rods once the fish get deeper than 40’ because they seem to set the hook better for me.
It helps reduce line twist if you use a ball bearing swivel tied about 2’ above the spoon.
I don’t use less than 14 lbs. test line because I usually hook a couple of big fish on every outing. My largest so far was a flathead catfish that went a little over 25 lbs. This past Monday, along with 27 perch, I had 4 nice stripers, the biggest being around 10 lbs. All of the stripers ate the 1/2 ounce white/silver reflector Berry spoon.
Big largemouth will also hammer the spoons. My biggest largemouth on the spoons went a little over 10 lbs. That fish was 38’ deep when it hit. I’ve caught largemouth as deep as 64’ this winter, and I’ve caught perch, white bass, catfish and stripers a lot deeper than that.

So just take the spoon all the way down to the bottom? Jake and party hard or just lite jigs?

Perch will bite minnows, worms, cutbait and almost any small artificial bait that you can get near them. That being said, my favorite way to fish for them is with the bumping spoons.

Perch seldom suspend, so I always let the spoons hit bottom on every fall. Experiment with the way you work the spoons. Sometimes you have to snatch the heck out of them to get the perch to hit them. Other times you have to barely move them, and sometimes, especially when they’re feeding on shad, they will hit them when held still just a little bit off of the bottom. When they’re really feeding well you can’t keep the spoons away from them.

Anyone know if they bite after dark? Thinking about giving it a try tonight.
