Pioneer 197 How Far Offshore?

Looking forward to taking my 222SF to the stream a lot this coming season. Then bottom bumping a lot as well.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

That should be your max range using the 1/3 rule with a 73 gallon tank and a 150HP four stroke.

Hey, Off course the 96 mile max range will have to be accompanied with a big ole set of nuts “Jack”

I always thought that the 1/3rd rule was that you wanted to have 1/3 tank left at the end of the day, not use only 1/3 tank....

That would double the range you have listed on there making it approx 200 miles in ideal conditions with 1/3 tank remaining

BTW, I have been out to the GTH and beyond in a friends Pioneer 197SF with a Yamaha 150 4 stroke. Three guys fishing all day with ice/beer and the safety gear listed by Wes.

Just sayin…

Boats that small usually don’t have much flare in the bow to speak of. You are going to get wet. There is no getting around that. Even in small waves with a light breeze, you will have water coming over the rail at you. I say this only to tell you that in the middle of summer, you can still get hypothermia. Running at 30 mph soaking wet will give you the chills. Make sure you are ready to get wet with a ride like that. I’ve heard of some crazies around here going up to 70 miles out in a boat like yours . . . . .

Also bring some extra gas with you. A couple of 5 gallon jugs maybe. If you ride is rougher than expected, you are into the fish in the worst way, etc. and need those extra 10 or 15 gallons, it’s better to have them with you and not need them, then need them and have left them on the hill. I know they might take up space, but you can get creative with your storage. Again, I’ve heard of guys who do this, with multiple 100+ qt. coolers full of ice, and all the safety gear on the boat, plus three full grown guys, just sayin’ . . . .

All the stuff that Phin said is a MUST!! Don’t go anywhere past the rocks without a good radio and even better antenna, some sort of device to alert someone in case you need it (EPIRB, SPOT, PLB, etc.), good life jackets, not the ones at Wally World. Some use the self inflating ones because they don’t take up much room and should you ever get thrown out of a boat (lynnmcd . . . . ) it could save your neck. Electronics and back ups for your electronics. You buy a GPS, get one that fits in your pocket too. You buy a radio, get one that fits in your pocket too. That kind of idea. Store some kind of provisions on your boat in case you get stuck for a while. Meaning a fresh water stash, some sort of non perishable food (MRE’s, etc.).

Oh, and if I didn’t say it already, all the stuff on Phin’s list. The only thing I would add would be a signal mirror. They teach us in the military that this is the simplest, cheapest, and in the right conditions most e

wow… I didn’t even bump this thread, but now I’ve had the boat almost 3 years. With exception of the last 6 months… I have had it offshore and diving every month of the year… Thanks for the reminders though guys…

Multiplier needs to be 2/3 instead of 1/3. 4mpg all around is about right though.

Serves me right for not checking the dates on the post. Now I feel stupid . . .

Well I guess I am one of the crazies some of you refer to. I have not made it out 70 miles…yet, but I am going. It’s just a matter of timing. I have this mosquito fleet bay boat and a overwhelming desire to offshore fish. I have been going offshore up to 45 miles out year round for 5 years now and still hear to talk about it. I am a USCG Vet and take all the necessary precautions, yet I know the situation can get out of your control quickly.
My suggestion is to take it slow to allow time to feel the limitations of your boat. A few trips to the Comanche, or Edisto Offshore will give you a good feel for her. Take it from there and good luck to ya…Nice boat by the way!

Life Is Good…Gotta Love It!!!

Been to the stream multiple times in mine. Never had any problems, it is a little wet and hopefully a nice set of curtains will be in my future. It’s not a 30 ft boat by any means but on a nice day I don’t have any problems running to the ledge. Hearing people say they will take 6 ft seas is comforting but I wouldn’t choose to ever do that if I could help it! Most of the time if the 20 nm forecast is 2 ft I’ll go and make a fairly comfortable 25-30 mph. Going to the ledge trolling all day and back is never more than 32 gallons with a 140 johnson.

Thought you lads were well versed in the 1/3 rule. 1/3 out (96miles), 1/3 in (96miles) and 1/3 as reserve.

Range is defined as “b. The maximum distance that can be covered by a vehicle with a specified payload before its fuel supply is exhausted.”

So, when you say that 96 miles is the maximum distance that can be covered by this boat, you are wrong. It is twice that with a 1/3 reserve. That is what Phin and I were trying to explain to you.

1/3 rule can kiss my ars…,that is what 5 gallon jugs are for.

You need to count the gas in the 5 gal jugs as well and dont forget extra oil, my E tec runs out of oil befor it runs out of gas! All boats need 3 tanks!!

Ohhh, now I get it. So my range is really 2x96miles. So I can really go 192 miles out into the ocean, thats all the way to the other side of the gulf stream. Maybe I could get into some yellowfin that far out. Just one question, how do I get back in?

The question was how far out in a 197. Range = 96 miles (1/3 tank) assuming you want to return to the hill. 96 miles out + 96 miles in + 1/3 reserve. Semantics.

192 is the magic number not 96. So you think the guy wants to drive 96 in a straight line turn around and drive 96 back? 192 is his comfortable range for the ride out, trolling and ride back in. I have a triton sea flight 22 with a 79 gallon tank and 150 Yamaha. Murrells Inlet to the GT Hole and trolling will be around 200 miles or alil less for us usually. I burn less than 50 gallons on that trip. 70 miles one way and that’s a long ride in my boat. 45 miles to 100+ ft is a big difference when the warm water and mahi come on in some. When I grow up I’m gonna get me a big boat so I can catch fish…
