Update: Well, the tractor is a beast, and it is much stronger than I anticipated–espcially in 4WD. I have reclaimed my property from the ice storm and three years of growth. Now, I’m working on my deer hunting area. I have a bunch of work to get done there. In fact, it will be several longs days of work to get it all done. In the end, I’m going to have about 50 feet wide by 150 yards long for a food plot. It will be too late for corn by the time I’m done, so I think I’m just going to go with peas that I alreay have mixed with soybeans. Then, about two weeks before the season, I’ll plant half in oats. I’ll post some pics from the stand when it is done.

I have more work to do, but it is coming along. It is about 130 yards from the tree to the tractor, and the tractor is where I’m going to put the corn with several trail cameras.

My buddy came over and dug up the stumps I needed removed. Now, I can disc all of it up, and I’m going to plant it in Soy beans and cow peas Friday evening.

Well, it is planted with soybeans, cow peas, and iron clay peas. But, I don’t think they are going to get to grow. The deer are already showing up on the cameras, and there are a bunch of them. I can;t wait to see what this guy looks like when he is done growing the rack.

quote: You can also plant collards. I believe deer love those as good as I do
Funny you should say that. Last Sunday a little deer jumped across our fence and into the yard, heading for the garden. My wife said look at the cute little deer in the yard. I said it’s heading straight for your collard greens, we need to shoot it. She said don’t.
The little doe went straight to the the collards and started chowing down. Wife says to scare it off. I told her that if we scared it off it would come back at night with all of her friends and there wouldn’t be a collard left in the morning. She says shoot the dang deer quick before she gets away

Heck no. What cracker said plus mix in some turnips and winter peas. If it’s a small plot just broadcast by hand.
Ok, so If I’m hunting over an older but small food plot. I can just broadcast some Oats or Wheat seed by hand without discing up the plot, or do I need to disc it? Thanks.

You’ll need to disc in order to get a decent stand. Open broadcasting on hard ground doesn’t have a good germination rate plus birds will get a good amount of seed. The only thing I broadcast with out discing is rye grass and I seed it heavy. and that’s for ornamental purpose not as a food plot.
Dang the man said the obvious that I neglected… But the lack of rain makes for some wonderful spot tail fishing in the mid to lower Edisto, Asheepoo, and Combahee.
I’ve had great luck with the deer and turkey coming to the oats, some with the wheat. Planted first oats late Spetember. I think I’ve planted some in Dec., too, did ok, not great
What is good to plant a month or two before deer season starts? We have fields that we sublease to farmers, and they plant corn or soybeans every year. But I’ve got some power lines, and so other areas that would make for good foodplot sites. Thanks for any advice.
