Yes, that is a beautiful boat. The great thing about a custom built boat, obviously, is you can get it just like you like it. I did that when I had my Skandia rebuilt. The layout probably would not be ideal for others, but it is perfect for me. The large boat manufacturers try to match the features of their boats to the greatest number of boat buyers, but there will be some things about every “store bought” boat that you will not like. Custom boats, built to your plans, allow you to avoid most things that might drive you nuts about other boats. This is especially true if you have owned many boats and have experienced the trade-offs mass produced boats must have.

Phin, have you looked at the JVX skiffs? My best friend has the 18’ model. His has a 70 Yamaha on it and some small trim tabs on the back. The first time I rode in it, I was impressed.

I’m a fan of a Sea Hunt 172 Triton because…that’s what I’m working with

heres a skandia build thread - http://forums.iboats.com/forum/boat-repair-and-restoration/boat-restoration-building-and-hull-repair/399358-1980-skandia-center-console-resto

not a lot to it, kinda looks like a Parker CC

If there was a question about rough water? I forgot to add a link to convince a wife that it is a safe boat and an image for you.

2 of my buddies have a Key West 1520, both with side consoles – I’d say it’s a tough boat to beat. It’s not a flat-bottom boat, but we’ve poled fully loaded with 4 guys through a foot (maybe less) of water, and she will get super skinny with just one or two. She will also handle the chop pretty well, though you won’t stay dry.

The side console really makes the boat feel a lot bigger than it is, without being as uncomfortable as a tiller drive. With 4 grown men on board, we’ve done everything from fighting bull reds just outside the inlets (sometimes doubling up) in Charleston, to chasing down and landing tarpon on light tackle in Florida, to gigging for flounder in the creeks here. It’s a really versatile boat – if they had a 17 or 18 foot version (kind of like the Key West Stealth, but with the side console) I’d say that would be pretty ideal for the type of fishing I do.

I’ve had my eye on these for a while: http://www.pangamarine.com/18-skiff.html

I fished with a guy who had one of these once some years back. It was a nice boat but narrow from what I can remember. Tricky to walk around the console with rods in the holders on the side.

Of your listed options, I like the layout of the Mako 18LTS for general purpose stuff. The other boats are nice if all you want to do is fish or throw a cast net in calmish water.

One big question I’d put to you is do you want to be able to walk on the gunwales (ie-East Cape, Maverick, flats boat style) or would you prefer to keep that space open (Mako, Carolina Skiff, KW 1720, etc). There are trade off with either I guess.

I would want more open deck space on an inshore boat for crab traps, gigging and shrimping gear, coolers, etc.

If I had a model with walkboards over the gunnels, I would probably have some kind of storage rigged up underneath them. Like you say- to get stuff off the deck and have the space…

Phin, I once got an account with photobucket, I think it was, and was not smart enough to figure out how to get pictures on here. My boat is a 21’7" 1980 Skandia. The outside looks like the Skandia in the rebuild thread mhebbard posted above. The inside had the same raw wood stringers and plywood deck, which I gutted with a chainsaw.

I had foam cored, but super strong stringers, transom, and deck installed. The deck was raised a few inches, especially at the bow to help it drain better, and foam was added. There is only one hatch, right in front of the motor, so no shrimp, etc. can get in the bilge. I opted for a side console placed close to the stern. Other than a 55# Motorguide TM, there are no other permanently installed features, leaving a large expanse of wide open deck - sorta like an “on the river patio”. It is about as simple a boat as 21ft. can be.

If someone can give me a “photos for dummies” class, I will get some pics on here.

Older model 17 mako! Drafts 9 inches and seaworthy enough to go 15 miles offshore.
