“Its not that corn kills the trout…its what corn fishing does to an angler’s soul”, Sir Izaak Walton 1676 (Too bad corn hadn’t reached England yet, but he should have said it). Don’t let anyone else see you using corn or those cute little pink berkeley power bait pellets…I’m just saying for your own self respect. LOL have fun. I was just told that its OK to use corn if you are younger than 12 yrs old. [:0]
This site will give you an idea of whats going on up near the dam…

I find it pretty helpful. Happy New year! Go GameCocks and Go Kittens!
I have not trout fished in the lower Saluda in over 25 years, but there was a time back then that I would go often. I worked in Irmo and would look at the river below the dam as I crossed. If I could see enough of the old bridge pylons just below the dam, the water was low enough to fish. We would drive down the power line right-of-way on the Old Bush River Rd. side, park, walk down to the river, and wade. You could walk all the way across the river. I always used corn on a tiny hook with a BB splitshot. Did really well once I figured out the bite, but one day I was smoked by a couple of guys using crickets. They were catching at least 3 to my 1. Can’t see the river from the dam any more nor can you drive down the power line right-of-way.

Biggest trout i have seen caught was like 2yrs ago. My father in law caught a 3# rainbow. I know bigger ones are caught but it was just a site to see that fish go airborne numerous times.
That being said, that was the only fish he caught that day. I kept trying to get him to tie on a spinner but he was content on just “fishing”…needless to say a float and cricket was what did it…he didnt get that big by eating spinners every weekend…

It went okay. My boat was way too big for that river. Even with the trolling motor only I still could not get to the rapids upriver. I did not hit anything thankfully but I wont put a boat that big on that river again. My girlfriend caught a couple of bream but no trout. That river is not like the Wateree or Congaree like I am used to. Next time I will be in a much smaller boat. Lots of rocks. Thanks for the advise.
A 14ft flat bottom boat was to big. Huh???

Thats what i was thinking…probably more of not being used to the river and how it runs. You can run a 20’ CC up river to the first trout zone. That may be a little extreme but it would get ya close.
The most trout i have caught have been in less than a 2ft of water. You don’t have go actually fish the rapids just fish the swift moving water below them. Or any blow back caused by them
Bomber your. Boat is perfect for the saluda, just have to put some more time on that river. If you ever decide to go down thats where it can get tricky. Cause the little bit of channel there is, snakes all the way down. I still prefer to fish down than up.

You might be right but ours was the only gas powered boat that was there. Also its a 16 footer not a 14 footer my bad. 1 Canoe was at the up river rapids and the other was a paddle boat that was down river. Both boats were beached and they were flyfishing off the rapids. Also it may not be too big in your opinion but when I see jagged rocks in 1 foot of water I turn around. If you want to go through there in your boat be my guest I will pass this time and the next and the next.
I do appreciate the advice and I may try again in a month or 2 but when March hits I will be back on the lake Striper fishing.
Hope u didnt take that the wrong way man. Wasn’t trying to be a butt. Its good that people still use good sense and caution. With all the idiots on the lake in the warmer months good sense and caution are thrown out with yesterdays trash. Good luck on your next trip.

No I did not take it the wrong way. I just did not have a good feeling about it. Thanks.
