you could catch sharpnose and bonnets on a 4000, but remember the blacktips are back and they eat the same things! id be amazed if someone caught a blacktip on a 4000 that was in the 5ft range
Hahaha good post!^. My favorite reels are shimano stradic fj’s. I have new symetres and ci4 and fi’s and they stay at home most the time, while the fj’s fill the rod racks! Also prefer 3000 fj for the t handle I have 1 2500 and its not as easy to grip as the 3000’s.
I don’t know about Okuma’s relative strength to Penn but I will say that Okuma has come a llloooongg way over the past several years. Not to mention that some of the Penn models are known to have had issues with their gear strength in high stress applications. Overall, I think Shimano offers the most reliable reels but there are plenty of other good options out there.
To the OP, I use 2500/3000 sized reels for almost everything inshore with the exception of my setups to target big breeder reds.
I use all Shimano 2500 from Sahara (kids and guests) to Stradics Cl4(me and me) and a Cl4 1500 for trout. Braid on all and I’ve yet to lose a fish I can blame on the reel.
I have a couple 4000 for shark and bull reds and they’ve never failed either.
Drag setting and tweaking the drag in the fight, if need be, usually takes care of any fish.
For the money ($70ish), I swear by Sahara reels and will buy them until they prove me different. My oldest Sahara is 4 years old and is as money now as it was new.
I’ll dig for the e-mail. You guys sent me two reels to beat the crap out of over the winter and report back. I fished them hard and sent back info. Then I sent the max drag video in a separate e-mail. it was about 4 minutes of high res video with the Trio and Penn playing tug of war.
