Did the same thing on my first big boy trip last Friday. Didn’t think I was going to make it back. I learned alot, i am taking extra gas next time. Made a run to Bimini last Aug. and only used 20 gallons max. and that is a 50 mile run. I have a 65 gallon tank. I have not yet topped off the tank and I am very curious to know how much it will take. Great post and congrats. I know how you feel and I can’t wait to get back at it.

So after having done the math here, over and over again, here is the deal. I burned just about every drop of gas in the boat.

Using 1.3 mpg fuel average for over 63 miles running at 3500-4000 rpm, trolling for about 20 miles at about 1,000 rpm burning 1.6 mpg, and then over 63 miles back running 4000-4500 rpm back using 1.4 mpg, the math works out to just over my fuel tank of 105 gallons. So I definitely cut it way too close.

I tracked my path on Google Earth using my GPS positions and my SPOT positions. So, the math we used was pretty accurate.

I’d use this as a proof source for the old lady to let you get a bigger boat…

 That’s funny because this has actually sparked a discussion in my house about a four stroke motor. Not a whole new boat, but who knows if I work the right angle on this one . . . .

His boat is plenty big enough. Heck, it has a lot more room than mine, and I am comfortable on mine. Though, I do have a case of 2footitis.:wink:
However, a four stroke would be great…

A 4 stroke will definitely be more reliable, quieter, etc etc but don’t look for it to be substantially better on fuel than your OX. We won’t tell your wife that though…and DON’T YOU either.
