Did GA ever pass the redfish as gamefish law?

what do you mean $1000 a fish?
$1000 fine is what Sells is getting at. Can’t sell a SC red.

Please, if you catch a tagged fish, just get the number off it for your report and T shirt, and please release it. The data is part of SCDNR research and is much more important for that than on your dinner plate!
There are many fish out there to keep. Please return the tagged fish! Thank you to those that do so.
End rant.

I guess what I have a hard time with is how you tagged a couple hundred fish and seem to think others should release like you do. I’ve caught maybe 30 or so this year and the only reason I released any of them was because they were over or under slot. I would dare say 25% released were gut hooked with a nice circle hook.
With the numbers of Spot tail in our waters I personally think the slot should be raised to four fish and from 12"-30". I believe you could then get your table fair with out having to go through the sorting process.
I am just coming to terms with people that fish to just release them. I was raised that fishing was a fun way to feed the family. Times change but I still love eating fish.
I’m all for the tagging program and would hate to see the upper slot limit moved anywhere above 25". If I could keep redfish up to 30" it wouldn’t take long for certain spots to not hold fish at all. Then again the redfish FISHERY helps keep me employed so I am biased.

NC is 26" and they dont have that problem!
The slot limit isn’t set for the hell of it. It offers a window of opportunity during that fish’s life-span that you can catch, and kill it. I want to say I remember the time period being around 6 months but I may be off. Basically, if that fish can survive for 6 months, the human threat will be significantly reduced and they will have a greater chance to mature to full breeder status. It allows for optimal harvest and reproduction.
Increasing the slot limit so that you could keep bigger fish would take larger, greater egg-producing reds out of the cycle. This would also be a short-lived gratification. Once the larger fish are removed from inside the slot then you will want another two inches to keep those fish just outside the increased slot.
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

Different coastal water layout up there.
NC has a HUGE problem and they are called gill-nets.

Fritz, not being a smart as this time around, but why do you think “certain” spots would no longer hold fish? I personally think if some of the reds need to be thinned out a long with BSB.

I have a buddy that lives up in the OBX and according to him, a lot of the big commercial seafood operations have direct ties ie Owners, family members, friends that are part of NC legislature.
Basically they run a big rackett up there and can shut down just about any proposal that is anti-inshore commercial fishing for flounder/trout/reds.
