Are there any horizontal rod holders that can be inserted into flush mounted rod holders that you’ve used and liked? The only one I know of is the CE Smith stainless outrigger rod holder that West Marine offers for $139 each. That seems like crazy too much money. I’d like to have a couple of horizontal rod holders for bait fishing without drilling holes and I don’t have a rail that I think will work.
These should work fine for the money … There are more expensive ones out there that can be made for the driftmaster style rod holders …
They’re nice for the money and would be good for trolling planer boards, but if he is looking to fish downrods, having 3 holders like that would put them too close.
Wcarlis, I’d consider just making some individual rod holders to fit in your flush mounts from pvc. They may look cheesy, but if it works for you who cares? You only need them when you’re fishing anyway.
Thanks LC and others. The same company (Amarine-made) makes a single adjustable for $31 and a single non-adjustable for $25. I wasn’t aware of this manufacturer, so thanks for the tip. I’ll give some thought to which of these will work best and probably order some. They make many different arrangements of this type of rod holder and for a fraction of the price of the Smiths.
^^^^ what fogman said^^^^ or maybe its just my habit but no matter what i’m after i always set rod tip just slightly above water and i let fish pull down before i pull up…[:0]might miss one occasionally but thats fishing…
I also like to reel until the rod loads up good before picking the rod out of the holder. This is a must for circle hooks but works well for all styles of hooks. I tell beginners and novices on my boat to do that. Once they get it down, we miss very few fish.
Got a buddy that fishes with me occasionally that i cannot break from “SETTING” the hook , I no longer use j-hooks,just circle, and he misses a lot of fish because of it.
I ended up ordering 4 of these for $32 each. Should be able to adjust the angle to achieve what y’all are talking about as far as rod tip positioning. Guess I’d better use the safety strap too.
