Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

most filet and release the snappers, some boats even have grills built in the cockpit, eat the evidence.
People, quit begging for tags and permits or you will be sorely unhappy when they go to a lottery system and you get your 1 red snapper permit every 5 years in a raffle. If the word “tag” or “permit” pops into your head, face the mirror and slap yourself in the head. Then, remind yourself that what we want is a SEASON… Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should we ever agree to a permit\tag system. This is a case of “good cop, bad cop”. It’s a false dilemma where they want you to think that “tag system” is the answer. They want YOU to pick the poison and they are just manipulating you to believe this. The correct answer is for the feds to get their head out of their asses and give us a season.
Yeah, I remember a few years back you setting up this exact scenario. Complete shut-down for years until any option to hand back out small scraps seemed like a good idea. +1 for that Nostradamus.
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

Not sure what you mean, but it seems like you are suggesting that the shut down was my fault.

Haha, no way. That last line came off pretty smart ass, I apologize. I was just saying I remember this discussion 3 or 4 years ago and you point blank said, this strategy of complete closure in a few years will have everyone jumping at whatever scraps NOAA would be willing to give back to us. Just extending an internet High-Five on the call.
Ah thanks! Fair enough. The Nostradamus thing threw me off. I get what you are saying now. Carry on.
They are leaning more towards descending devices instead of venting tools.

I have seen several threads mentioning descending devices, Will the fish’s stomach actually go back in place. Are there any factual studies that this actually works? Seems they would just be more food for cuda’s and shark. ??
Any divers on this sight that has seen a descending device in action? Does it work?
I remember the first fish I saw vented. I still don’t see how fish survive that and the ones that do how do they survive being extremely sluggish and prime pickings for Cuda and shark?
I figure if a person is going to go out and pull up a fish from great depths with its butthole blown out, eyes bulging and stomach slung out it’s mouth the least they could do was give it a quick death and feed themselves.

“Why Bruce?”
Hey Fred, other than billfish and occasionally a king turning their stomaches inside out while trying to throw a hook, most of these fish have distended air bladders. I am with you though. I’ve never laid eyes on a fish we send back down. I will tell you that the fish will be motionless in the boat and once they hit about the 50ft mark come right back to life and start kicking ass again. The air bladder will return to normal once baro pressure is restored but I have no idea how much damage is done because of that distention.

Gonna get Rec tags or something similar eventually like it not.Better to have a place at the table when it gets planned. Most of the meetings I make are sadly under represented by the Rec community.
Blaming the commercial fleet for everything just gets you ignored at the council level, they manage the two fisheries separately and are quite happy with continuing to do so.The TAC is split differently on each species as are seasons and gear in many cases. The sheer numbers of Rec forum members along the EC on many forums show a significant effort is made(much less the folks with no interest in forums or FB) and since it is not in any way scientifically accounted for they will likely err on the high side, giving Rec guys the short end of the stick.
How will tags/permits, etc. solve the problem of any fish shortage if the discards that occur while fishing for other species causes the demise of the managed fish?
To answer my own question, managers might get a better estimate of the population they are trying to manage. If they prove to be plentiful , problem solved.
If they prove to be in danger, however, then what?
Again, to answer my own question, managers will have to do something to reduce the discard. That could be done with release devices ( although, right now, the only people who seem to know for certain that they work are the makers of the said devices.)
More likely, I’m afraid, the idea of large sanctuaries will pop up as more and more fishermen use better and better electronics to compete over a finite amount of desirable hard-bottom.
So what is the solution to the whole problem of too few fish and too many fisherman?
The obvious answer is more habitat.
The obvious answer IS MORE HABITAT!!! Bingo! But sadly, as I bring it up at every meeting, The Idea never finds its way to any new policy discussions or laws. It makes no (**() sense at all, yet it is the key to all the problems. Fill every piece of sand bottom with structure on the entire eastern seaboard and have an infinite resource that can never be overfished. It comes down to food and if we want to fill the planet, creating clean ocean habitat is the no brainer way to do it…that is if we don’t pollute the ocean to extinction simultaneously
South Carolina has 187 miles of coastline. We have about 50 artificial reefs.
Alabama has 50 miles of coastline. They have about 190 artificial reefs. Red Snapper are the main- stay of their fisheries.

Alabama has thousands of "private" reefs, because they understand capitalism. Our guys don't like the idea of not being in control of every detail. It's ego and fear of change. The answer is staring them in the face.
I would go create my own reefs tomorrow if the government let me. On my dime. It’s a PIA. If and when I get to retire to the SC coast I may not wait on anyone…May just dump a pile of rocks in one spot every time I get the chance. Our Government is useless. …So we may as well not wait on them.
I personally escorted a properly vented ARS to 30 ft last week. It is tough to watch them get mauled by barracudas on the decent. I’ve caught more than ever these last two years in places I’ve never caught them before. Isn’t it correct that they are still commercially fished? Anyway, it has always been my impression that the people who are making the rules have never fished. I’m not sure what can be done about that. It’s just the all or nothing thing that defies reason.

No, they are not currently commercially fished in the South Atlantic region. The last time there was a season, they had a 50lb trip limit.
