Penn battles are great. They will last you a long time and handle big fish very well.

When I first got into kayak fishing, I went out and got some higher-end gear but I found that the lower-end Shimano rods/reels are the way to go. You can put together a decent Shimano combo for less than $100.

I would NOT spend a ton of money on a kayak rig cuz they usually get wetter/saltier than on a boat.

Penn Battle combos were on sale at Haddrells a week or so ago. I would check that out.
Last time I was up there they had them on sale for 100$. I think they had 2500-4000 size only. That is a (**() good deal. Ive had my battle for over a year now and love it. Its my “newest” reel. I also have a few other penn and shimano reels that are at least 6-7 years old. Rinse em when you get home and take them apart and grease them at least twice a year. Just like anything else if you take care of it, it will last a whole lot longer.
All fishermen are liers except me and you and I’m not sure about you.
Haddrell’s has Penn Battle 4000 combos for $99. I saw them at the west Ashley store Saturday.

If you are planning to throw plastics, I would keep the reels 2500-size or less. I had been using 3000 size but the lightweight stuff is easier on your hands/arms/joints.

Does Haddrell’s still have the Battle 2’s on sale?! I checked their website and it’s not showing any sale or discount.
Secondly, I finally got a good fish on my Penn Fierce 4000, and now it’s busted. The drag won’t set and anytime I go to “jerk” or “twitch” or “set a hook” it just let’s line out… Drag is busted I guess, and it won’t tighten down. I bought it a week ago… Going to take it back and cash it in for the Battle 2 reel, but I wouldn’t mind picking up a whole new set up for $100 too!
Big Ups to Hurricane701 (Simon) for all the help! I bombed it down to HPT-WA yesterday afternoon and picked up 2 brand new PENN Battle II combos for $99 each! I Called ahead and Hurricane701 had them backed/spooled for me when I arrived. As an added bonus, by buying 2 of them, I qualified for the FREE PENN Drycase Drybag offer they still have going on (Offer ends 07/06/2015). So for a $9.95 personal check (and 6-8 weeks for delivery) I’ll also be getting a $90 drybag! It’s going to be like a random christmas when it shows up
