Sea sickness

Bonine the night before and another that morning. Take it from someone who can chum better than any store bought chum in the box.

Stay out drinking till about 3:00 am. Get up at 5:00am eat some over easy eggs, grilled split weiners grits with lots of butter and two cups of coffee. Go to boat and take a big whiff of gas/diesel fumes, drink a beer and bite the head off of a frog. Nothing worse can happen the rest of the day.

I’ve only been out on the ocean a few times but I remember my first trip. While still in the harbor, I didn’t feel sick but I did feel like I was beginning to feel different, don’t know how else to describe it. I told myself that it was absolutely stupid to be feeling that way considering how at that point it was no different than being on the lake, which I’ve bee many, many times. Never really had a problem after that except a little bit one time. That was sitting inside the boat on another trip looking out the window. I started feeling that same feeling and decided to just step outside. No problem whatsoever afterwards.

I’m like Black-Bart, well sorta… I get drowsy from the dramamine so I just do without.
No spicy foods the night before, no processed cheese slices on my sandwiches while i’m out there and when the squid turns milky I move to the most “upwind” spot on the boat. Seriously the smell of the warm squid will get me everytime.

Hydration the day before and morning off. Less drowsy dramamine night before and morning off and eat something with protein, an empty stomach will only feel worse and you’ll just be spewing bile or dry heaving.
Go out excited for the day and don’t think about it, i agree with the rest that mentioned it being mental.
4 Years ago i was good all the way to the ledge, as soon as we hit neutral it hit me and i felt terrible.
Next thing i know we’ve got 4 lines hitting hard and and i feel better. Dramamine doesn’t have anything on a nice mahi or tuna on the end of your line.

You have two ears and one mouth, science would say you should listen twice as much as you speak.

I carry the scopin pills for those feeling sick. They work within minutes.

Old salt in Virginia carried cookies and canned meat. All I knew fishing until I moved to chuck over thirty years ago. Never felt the least bit sick with that diet.

Wando, what kind of canned meat are we talking! Spam/Deviled Ham/Corned Beef:question:

Corn beef mostly but spam appeared from time to time.

I don’t know much about much, but I DO know about getting seasick. Tried it all! Dramamine(not even close to working), Prescription Scopalamine(worked but I was an absolute zombie the whole day. Sells said he liked me better when I was puking up kidneys!)

Here is my remedy and how it works:

I do not eat anything when I get up in the morning. I chew up two bonine tablets on the way to the landing. I don’t drink anything with them. Sure the taste is not the greatest, but it is better than yesterdays chum! This way the only thing that is in my stomach is pure bonine, which is quickly absorbed in my system. About 20 minutes after taking them, I drink a water, and game on!

Trust me this works! After getting sick so much on my own boat, I was ready to sell the (**() thing and take up professional badminton or something. Stumbled across a bonine post in THT and it has never been the same since!

Good luck!

Ditto on what Budman said about the saltines! When I was in the CG that’s all I heard was “eat saltines”. Them things will choke you to death coming back up. I stick with the Bonine night before and morning of now. Haven’t been sick yet. Did that with the Dramamine and had a couple woozy spells, but didn’t blow. Don’t hurt to have a biscuit, or sandwich for breakfast before going out either.

I just started offshore fishing last year and was never superstitious up to that point. On my very first trip in “my” boat, I’m about to back the boat down and my brother-in-law is about to put his cooler in the boat. I jump out and ask what’s in the cooler and he said just some water and a little food. I opened it up and there were the BANANAS.I took them out and told him they were not allowed on the boat and he thought I was crazy. He told me they would go bad before we got back and I let him know I didn’t give a dang. His wife went a few trips later and kept joking about bringing some, I let her know that I would seriously throw her and the bananas in the water if I found out. Gas was/is too expensive to gamble on bananas.
