I got some shiny new poles today. I made a cradle out of PVC to keep them up out of the way. I know the pic doesn’t look real sturdy but its on there pretty good.

I changed to fiberglas poles and never looked back. Still have a set of PVC poles for backup…

It was tough to come off the cash for fiberglass but I think I did the right thing. It was going to cost 80$ to make 3/4 conduit poles. I had it all calculated at Lowe’s.
Here is my logic. Pay 80$ and if shrimping sucks so bad I never want to do it again, I couldn’t sell them for much if anything.
Fiberglass were 155$ at Anglers in Moncks Corner. If I want to sell them, I could pretty easily get 100$. Even at 100, I am out 55 as opposed to 80 for diy poles.

you made the right call! I’ll admit, in hindsight I wish I had done the same, and I’m about as hardcore DIY as them come.

I made some designer conduit/PVC poles originally…10 ft conduit pushed 3.5 ft into 10 ft PVC,
pvc filled with spray foam, sharpened wooden dowel in conduit and coated with fiberglass resin for a point. Resharpened
and recoated a few times over a few years. Went into any bottom, bent too easily but could be straightened.
I think my fiberglass poles are going into their 5th year now. The fiberglass poles are actually garden tool
handle material…you can buy it but you have to get a LOT, and you’d still need to get the tips and caps.
$160 isn’t bad for a set. This site has 8’ lengths of fiberglass tube…
http://www.mgs4u.com/fiberglass-tube-rod.htm
They are $10 each, so $20 for a 16ft shrimp pole. You could glue two together using a piece of 3/4" tube or rod.
You could use a piece of the solid 3/4" and sharpen it for a point, and to plug the top. That would
make it water tight…I don’t know if it would float. There’s no choice for a high viz color but you could paint them.
I still may replace my tips with sharpened solid fiberglass rod.
One add for the fiberglass poles…a few years in the sun and they will start to shed some glass strands that will
get in your hand. Painting them helps, as does storing them out of the sun. By the time they start to fade, they will
get strands of glass in your hands if you wear gloves or paint them.
