Steam cleaned would be great! The cleaner it is, the easier it is to weld.

Chip,
I have resealed/rebuilt my '79 Evinrude 150 foot once. Removing the carrier is by far the hardest part. If your motor ever saw saltwater it seems to seize the carrier in. It took a helluva puller to get it out. I used a tractor gear puller and when it finally came loose it sounded like a shotgun. I didn’t think it was going to ever come out it had so much force on it. The two tips I have for you are to download a parts breakdown from a manual (Crowley marine is a good source)and be sure to put the O-rings under the carrier bolt heads. (These are the really long bolts.) Without those, you will continue to get water inside and they are easily left out- but clearly seen in the exploded view. Good luck.

It was actually pretty easy. Motor has Def never been in salt or at least was well taken care of if it had been. Just picked up the case from Bob. Sitting down now to rebuild…fingers crossed…only problem I see is the crack was right where 1 of the snap rings goes in. It is at least in the top one which I assume is a back up ring. Won’t be able to put it back in. Fingers crossed again…lol…

And…it’s ready to go back on. 4hrs isn’t too bad for my first try. That also includes a trip to lowes/wally world/advanced…thanks again Bob…let still hope all is well once I put it on the boat.

Looks good…you gonna try and get it on for a test run tomorrow?

It’s back on ready for oil…prob gonna run to the dam in the morning just to make sure all is well and if it is I will be headed to Wateree to look for some shad…

Side not when I was getting ready to put it back together I noticed the weld actually ran over into both snap ring slots. With alot of patience and a dremel I Was able to clear both slots and get both rings back in…

You’re very welcome Chip! Glad you were able to get the snap rings in. Let me know how the test run goes.

Well I must say I am super excited that this is behind me. It preformed better than any other time I have had it on the water. The foot was definitely in need of an overhaul. It shifts better than ever before. Super smooth. And believe it or not I actually gained 2mph on my top end. I guess that’s what happens when your bearings are covered in oil instead of water…lol…

Awesome! Impressive knocking that out like that.

Nicely done, Chip (and Happy Bob). We had our fingers crossed for you. I also bet several people learned something from the misadventure.

Congratulations! I figured you would find a way. You are obviously mechanically talented and Happy Bob is apparently a heckuva a welder. Chip, if anything like that ever happens to my old 175, I’m calling you:smiley:

Glad to hear you got it back together and all seems to be ok.

I’m glad the test run went without a hitch. Can you take a close up picture of the welded foot? I want to add it to my portfolio.

I have an old one off my 1978 evinrude 115 that has a broken fron pinion gear but you are welcome to it if you can use it. I have a 81 lower unit on my 1978 now so I know some of the older ones are swappable.

glad for you but not surprised at all. just a little impressed

Here ya go bob. Just now getting a chance to take a couple. .

I will dress it up a good bit this summer when I have some more time…right now I am happy with having a working boat.

Thanks Chip.
When you get around to “dressing it up”, go easy on sanding/grinding and try to leave as much of the surface weld as you can. Wire wheel, prime & paint.
