Sunday morning

There was a time that I used to spend a lot of time and effort catching my own bait this time of year. However, I badly ripped my net a couple years back and have not yet replaced it. Also, life has gotten so hectic that when I get to the lake, I’m ready to simply wet hooks. When I was catching my own, David didn’t mind it at all and even gave advice at times. He knew he would be getting my business the rest of the year.

So I guess we got one king of the jungle on here and the rest of us are the lost wandering sheep.

Just reel or get broke

HappyBob, thanks for posting a report. It’ll give me some additional info for next time wind stops blowing and I can fish as I haven’t fished live bait other than the one night at towers since March MSC tourney.

Just remember that’s someone’s way of living as well…I am sure your boss would love to have you work for free one day out of the week but that’s how you make a living…lol…

Dont mean to come off as a A-hole but those bait guys are up in the middle of the night freezing/sweating their tails off. Throw them a bone even if the bait catching is easy…

one thing I can say and I am not the only one, a couple of times back in the day I have planned on catching my own, said I ain’t paying the bait man today…well the bait wasn’t there and I had to humble myself and drive back to the bait shop.

Are you kidding me? Come on dude...this is comical. He pays no rent on the towers, doesn't own rights to the herring or shad and is taking a non native species(I believe).

Desperate argument at best.

And noslack63 made good points

Im like Fogman…I would rather spend time trying to catch fish than trying to catch herring. Gizzards, different story because they are more expensive and hard to find to buy around Lake Murray.

Ned and David are good guys and I know how hard they work and how far they have to drive a lot of the time for the money they make so I have no problem giving them my money.

Agreed. IMO, Using Chip’s argument you would have to believe you are also taking money out of the pockets of mechanics, painters,

Y’all missed the whole point of my post, and maybe I am missing the whole point of y’all’s either way. Tight lines …

Yeah I also think the point was missed. Without the baitmen slot of fisherman on this and any lake would have problems .this is the best month to catch your own, other then that the rest of the year is harder for sure. Thanks to George ,Martha ,David ,Richard,Kevin,Ned, and Chip and others for supplying us ALL with bait YEAR ROUND Tough business and y’all do it well.

Wow… Not sure how this got perceived as a baitman bashing thread, since many of us have mentioned the only way we get live bait is from them. I’m sure I’m not the only one who remembers having to be at the boat ramp in the morning to get bait from Jimmy Jones before he ran out or you had to go catch it.

What I was referring to was the suggestion to a guy who was considering trying to catch bait on Murray for the very first time that, because guys do it for a living, that would be like asking him to go without pay for a days work.

Anyway, not so important what you guys think, but I know Richard reads these threads and hopefully he didn’t misinterpret it that way too. I need some bait in the morning.

The whole point of your post was to basically encourage everyone not to go catch there own bait cause it’s a waste of time and just spend money on the bait man. Call it what u want but that’s what everyone sees here. The bait man gets plenty of my money and I’m sure everyone else’s why cause it is convenient so if these guys want to take on the task of trying to catch please do it’s their right

Just reel or get broke

Yep

All the bait guys do great job and provide a service we really need. When you travel to other areas you appreciate them even more. I also don’t think they care if someone goes out and catches their own when it is available, which for Herring is very short time on Murray. I am not willing to put in the time and effort so I buy my bait from the bait guys. I would rather spend my time fishing.

Joby

I remember in the early 80’s when we we would leave home at 2 AM and drive to R.R dam, put in boat and catch bait, put boat back on trailer and drive to Murray and fish at day light catch 40 fish and head home at 8:00. At 71 I just can’t do that anymore! The bait man does all that for me now and onyl charges me a little $ What a deal!
