uni to uni has and will always be the way i connect my leader to my main line. You can catch everything from tarpon to redfish and the knot will knot give way. I use a split shot weight to keep my egg sinker in place if fishing a carolina rig on the bottom. The uni knot is just about the only knot I use now of days. Weather its connecting my leader or to my grub or hook.
Just make sure that the diameter of both lines are just about the same and it will work every time w/o slipping or breaking.
Here is the fishing report from the last three fishing trips. 21 breakoffs and 5 fish in the boat. Landed 4 8-9# black drum and one 8# red. If any of you catch a fish with 5 leaders hanging out of it’s mouth … that’s my fish.
I’m fishing the same spot I’ve fished for years and never had breakoff problems like this. Break offs were on swivels and various knots (and never used to get hardly any breakoffs with swivels).
Tried tightening down the drag to horse them out before they get in the pilings. Tried loosening drag to take my chances with getting wrapped around the pilings. All breaking off …
Any ideas … ? Using 20-30# braid on different set ups and 20# leader.
I enjoy fooling with knots & have tried all mentioned but the Albright. There’s another flouro to braid that I’ve been using recently. It’s the “slim beauty” knot. It isn’t easy to do in a rocking boat, but it’s strong & has a very low profile. You can Google & find it on several of the knot websites.
Uni to Uni. Tightening the braid first might help. I feel that the braid sliding through the leader as you pull it tight tends to cut into the leader a bit. When I tighten the braid side first, I know the leader it’s sliding on won’t be where all the pressure is when fighting a fish.
Double line in the braid with a bimini or spider hitch. Attach the mono with a bristol knot.
When Sport Fishing mag did their test of braid to flouro connections, this was by far the strongest connection. I will often do this in my garage when preparing for a day of fishing. But, if i’m on the water and the fishing is hot, I use a uni to uni and suffer few breakoffs.
If you are having cut-offs due to heavy/sharp structure vs failed knots, try going up in your braid test poundage (30-50).
One of my spots is ‘nasty’ w/ all the hang-ups, and though my breakoffs have not been totally prevented, the heavier braid helped me alot. I also tie directly to the hook, no leader. My flouro was getting shredded too, so I skipped the flouro and still get same # of bites.
The water clarity will wain in the next several months, so shouldn’t be a problem w/ fish seeing your line…

Not at all doubting your word, SH, but do others agree with this? I know it can be a pain in the but retying leaders and I’m guilty of feeling a nick, being lazy about retying, and missing a fish or two.
I know last Sat. when I had the family fishing and I’m the only one who could tie knots I thought I would lose my mind tying knot after knot!

Thanks for all the advice. I’m going to try some different things. I’ll let you know what ends up working.
SaltHunter, I’ve tried tying the hook directly to the braid. After a few leader breakoffs, I got impatient and tried to tie directly to the hook … bite turned off. Granted, the water was pretty clear that day.
It seems to me…not tying knots correctly( you should be able to tell if line breaks or knot turns loose…or you have ceramic eyes and at least one is cracked and fraying line…or well maybe time to change line…what else could it be?..sharp egdes inside swivel diameter? bad pack of swivels? not trying to be smart arse…I remember I was fishing a spot and kept getting hit hard with Fingers…set hook but got cut off several times…when tide got low enough saw was fishing over a cable

I can’t speak for other folks, but I agree 100%. No difference in number of bites in my experience. I run 30 pound braid, most often with hook at the end and a couple split shot.
Hoping to get down this weekend or next, my son’s athletics have kept me around Columbia. Let me know when you have some time, I’ll bring the boat down. I can keep a secret!
