i don’t even tarpon fish and this is a great thread- packed with information!
I am planning to go tomm and I cant decide if I wanna fish the jettys for tarpoon or stono inlet. Havent heard the jettys heating up lately. Seems like it gets better there towards the end of August, however its nice to set up there becuase still have a great chance of hooking up w a few big reds or a nice shark. Stono is a great place for tarpoon becuse of all the ocean bars, and the bait has been thick, but the only other things i usually catch there when targeting tarpoon is shark. . . What to do?
Get out There!
just wanted to add one thing… if there are sharks around… that usually means there are tarpon around… you just gotta go through a good bit of hooks
anyone fished the north edisto lately? thinking about going down to deveaux bank tomorrow. fished raccoon today with no bites and saw no fish. Have heard that they are in the north edisto and was wondering if anyone else had heard anything?
Bootlegger,I fished that area last week-end. I didn’t see any tarpon. The mullet are not too heavy yet. I’ll be back out there again this week-end. Its time for them to be there but I haven’t seen a one yet as I go there often.

thanks for the reply marsh-picker. fished south bulls today w/ once again no fish seen or hooked. big hadens are around though!
what is the favored method?? ive always hung one or two on the bottom and possibly one on a balloon rig way back. the only knock down ive had was a balloon rig close to the beach. and on a live haden. whats everyone elses thoughts?

I do pretty much the same. I put out two carolina rigs with 5-6ft of 80-100lbs mono leader. Then I also put out at least one float and if possible I will put a second out. I prefer the float over balloons. I will fish it anywhere from 10ft to 30ft behind the boat. If you decide to use a float just make sure that the terminal tackle on it is heavy enough for the fishing you are doing. I use a blue water float. Once the mullet start to move I will free line one 10ft behind the boat. You can’t really get to close to the boat. It makes for an awesome bite!
Been out the last two days and haven’t seen or hooked any fish. Wish I could find bait in the areas I want to fish. Think I’m headed back out towards raccoon or bulls tomorrow. Something has got to happen eventually.
I’m about the same 2 on the bottom and 2 floats,I’ll use a balloon if I need it to get the bait away from the boat.I also keep a penn 6500 spinning reel on a slammer rod rigged with a big topwater mullet looking bait to throw at em. I also chum if the sharks aren’t too terribly bad. They’ll show up soon-----I hope!

Fished for reds in the north edisto today and ran through botany, saw a lot of birds diving on boat and dolphins busting but didnt see a tarpon either
havent been this year going out tuesday, cant get one if you dont go.
Tried again today around Deveaux, sharks and rays no tarpon. Hadn’t been able to get there before the tide was full the last 3 trips, will go Saturday on the last of the outgoing so I can watch where the bait is moving when the tide turns and stay till the heat runs me out, nephew coming also in his boat so we’ll split the area and try to find em. Pelicans are after the big menhaden.

went yesterday again to raccoon. Fished around the key and bait was everywhere but still no fish seen or hooked. It was the best looking area I have seen all year and still nada. Also fished north bulls for a little while with no luck. Taking a break for the next few days and will be back out soon. I just don’t think that they are here in the numbers they were last year. Its still early so hope it only gets better.
Marsh-picker hope you get one down there this weekend. Please pm if you get one or see anything.
Fished 2 boats about 1/2 mile apart from 7am-4pm.We did not hook, jump or see any sign of tarpon. We fished in front of Seabrook, south side of Deveaux all the way down to within a few hundred yards of Frampton Inlet. We covered alot of area. I’m going down around Edisto Beach,St,Helena sound area next week-end,but at this time I sure have my doubts about em this year.Has anyone hooked, seen, jumped any fish south of Charleston this year?

yes i know of a couple of different guides that have been down your way and have seen them feeding heavy on mullet. They have caught, hooked, and seen them feeding. This was about 2 weeks ago. Was told by one that they were right around Deveaux feeding on mullet in 4 ft of water with there backs out the water.
I to feel that they are not here in the numbers they were last year. have fished really hard and only seen 2 fish roll in 12 or so days of fishing. Last year was just a special year and now its back to our normal year. I know of a couple of guys catching them here and there but they are few and far between. Going to give a couple of tries each week but might just have to wait for the mullet run. Just keep waiting on them to show up in better numbers. It was right around this time last year when I started to get on them consistently so hopefully it will get better. Just keep telling myself its still early.
thanks for keeping me informed. Will do the same for you.
Still learning here.
what about drag? should drag be set differently for the bottom than the top/freeline?
plenty of fish around this year. i’ve hooked same number this year, 38, as last year and we still have at least another month of tarpon fishing to go. i’ve had a much harder time keeping them on this year but getting more bites. here’s the tip> fish free-lined baits. my last 8 of 10 tarpon bites have come on free-lined baits while we were also fishing baits on floats and bottom. will get together a post with pics soon. my laptop has been down but got a new one now. good luck on silver…
