Star drags are good for bottom fishing and this:

But NOT ideal for trolling… Yes, you can catch fish on star drag reels trolling, but I hate not being able to adjust the drag with confidence.

I’ve got Squall LD 50s on Rampage XXH jigging rods. Reels are spooled with 500yds of 30lb. No issues thus far, just can’t winch 'em in. By winter, I’ll have 40# braid backing on them with 40# mono. I shopped around and got the combos brand new spooled for under $200 each. They aren’t fancy, but very functionable.

Andy, are yours 2-speed or 1?

I prefer star drags for bottom fishing and lever drags for trolling, personally. Never really found much advantage of a 2 speed reel either. Simple is best, for me and the simpletons I fish with.

Scott, I’ve got a TLD30S 2 speed on a Penn International rod that I would let go for a good price.

Check craigslist for deals. I got a 6/0 114h Senator and uglystick roller rod (50-130#) for $175 (combo total) a few months back. It had been used once, looked new, filled with line. Can’t wait to use it myself.

I have a new lefthand squall 60 that feels great that I will be breaking in shortly and some old senators that my dad fished for 10-20 years and are in nearly perfect working condition (one clicker is a big quite).

I want to catch them all

Thanks again for all the ■■■■■■■■, y’all. I forgot to ask, would y’all go with conventional boat rods or stand-up boat rods? I’m thinking conventional because I’ve been told they have longer butts and are more comfortable to use, but I’m not sure. Your thoughts, please?

Stand up rods are more comfortable to fight from a belt. I find the longer butts better for tucking under an armpit when reeling but not a comfortable when using a belt.
