skinneej, I cannot argue with any of your points. I was really glad to see you and scdiver give comments at the meeting. You both did a great job.

Thanks! Nice seeing you there as well.

Freefish…Can you send me some of your postcard petitions?..Anything to possibly help.

Unfortunately, it’s only a matter of time. This pervasive arrogance of attitude will lead to a revolution which will lead to a execution of a selected few which will lead to the unleashing of the hounds from hell with their stinking badges. Then the rest of us will be judged guilty by association, fishing terrorists.

SkinneeJ, Freefish, Scdiver thanks for going to the meeting and speaking. I was out of town and sorry not to make it. We should rally for a big group at the december meeting and put some heat on the agenda. Thanks for all the additional work you guys have done.

emptypockets, my empty pockets have had me sleeping in my truck the past three nights with very limited internet access as I make my way from Charleston to Tampa for the Marine Resource Education Program. I will be happy to send you some postcards as soon as I get back home next weekend. Please email me your address. freefish7@hotmail.com I pay for the postcards and travels by selling calendars of pictures I have taken while working around the water. Please check them out at this link and consider getting one for yourself and/or to give as a gift. This is my only way of funding my work and any help from you or anyone else would be greatly appreciated. http://www.freefish7.com/natural-art.html

Fishnbarrels, you are welcome. I was glad to be there. Please check out this link to the blog I set up to discuss ideas/solutions for the SAFMC Visioning Project. http://www.freefish7.com/safmc-visioning-project.html

Over the past several months, I have been reading about MPAs hoping to develop a more in-depth understanding of the issues. As such, I attended the Q&A session last week and was STUNNED by the low turn out.

Those of us that couldn’t be there, may have been there, before you, last year, the year before, the bus trip to DC, etc… Please don’t judge us, as we are glad you could make it and hope you stood up for all of us that couldn’t. Thank you.

Are We There Yet?

I for one think all the fisherman need to organize to fight this Government over reach.
(**() tired of their shinigans.maybe about 500 fisherman ought to show up at there meetings. Meanwhile anyone that has connections in state and federal Government ,now would be the time to use them. This will hurt the entire economy in regards to fishing all along the SC Coast. For those that say it won’t ever happen I would say if you don’t act you may loose your fishing grounds. They have banned areas and species before. The Government is trying to bann hunting in the whole state of California .
With the current federal Administration we have now look at what they have already tried or done.

Unfortunately, this a realistic proposal for our waters off SC.

The importance of the completion of the South Carolina Memorial Reef will/may have an impact on the Fed’s decision as we have been told.

We saw this first presented in May of this year. Basically, the Feds have said “we established the Charleston Deepwater Reef MPA 7 years ago and nothing has been done”, hence the decision to place the SCMR in that MPA to prove that we are/can in fact trying to do something to provide additional habitat. And when they speak of closing, they are talking about ALL fishing, surface and bottom.

The first phase of the SCMR project was scheduled to be completed prior to the August meeting but met with the expected delays, though the required funds were raised by mid July and we had everyone on standby to start. We are on schedule for Phase 1 to be completed and placed in October with Phase 2 shortly thereafter.

We have been told that this will make an impact on possible MPA alignments and we are working diligently with all involved to make this happen as soon as possible. The funds have been raised and construction is well underway.

We all need to spread the word. Please take action and contact your representatives at the local, state and federal levels.

Thank you skinnee for bringing this to charlestonfishing.com.

We have posted similar updates on our website at scmemorialreef.com and on our Facebook page.

Here is another graphic that should alert you. I want you to look REALLY CLOSE at the little grey boxes and the red boxes and the way that they are configured. The little grey boxes are the existing MPA’s. The red ones are the proposed MPA’s. They keep saying, “Hey, we don’t want to add any new ones, just reconfigure the old ones”… Please understand that “reconfigure” means “grab more ledge”. The ledge runs SW to NE. If you take a rectangle that is oriented E to W and rotate it so that it runs with the ledge, it grabs a LOT more ledge. Look at the “reconfiguring” of the Edisto MPA and the “Georgia” area. Those boxes stuck out into the sand and only had a bit of ledge on the Western edge. Now, they want to rotate them and stretch them out to grab more rock!!! It’s deceptive and manipulative…

Thinks about what is going on here. They tried to grab the entire ledge before but we shot them down. Now, their plan is just to chip away at us. It should disgust you. A bit of re-configuring, a bit of “extending”. A few new ones, and next thing you know you are asking yourself what happened.

It’s like skin cancer. It’s not going to kill you the first day, but if left untreated, it’s going to kill you…

Its not that its too unruly - its that it will never happen. Getting the fishing community together is like herding cats. The best we could hope for is a repeat of the VMS battle. The last thing the SAFMC wants is pressure from elected officials and a barrage of negative comments. This is the direction we should take.

Skinnee is very correct. Warsaw and SH grouper were never any more than 5% of the catch. I have fished the ledge and beyond for over — since the early 60"s ( (**() I’m getting old) On the head boats i’ve worked on and captained we almost never saw a Warsaw and only a few SH grouper. The Warsaw’s & SH grouper were usually caught in 300 - to 400’or deeper on bandit rigs. The status today is a guess and the status back then is unknown

I have no knowledge of nor interest in this ledge.I do have experience in large turnout at a public hearing.Show up in large numbers and it will have an impact…First a large group will overflow the hearing room seats. The commitee will get concerned and bring in extra security.(This was 15 years ago). Then the first person who makes a comment will be answered with something no one in your group likes and the crowd will make disapproval noises/body language. After a few more comments you will ask to leave or be escorted out.
In today’s world, a large group of angry fishermen would probably be considered a threat.

If in fact you can get a large group to attend one of these meetings,I would suggest you elect one member of this group to speak for you.He should speak with the committee head before the meeting and explain this to him.Elect one person to record the meeting. Be respectful and calm!
The mere fact that a large number of folks show up will make a positive impact on your point of view. And it will influence any publicly elected members of the committee. The committee will most likely meet again in private and consider your concerns.
Make a positive impression on these committee members and it will help your cause.Be unruly and your impact could be counterproductive.
If you haven’t already done so,start a state chartered non-profit organization to coordinate your efforts, then seek out any other state organizations and start a national organization with state affiliates.
The HSUS (Humane Society of the United States)are after farmers and hunters now but fishing will follow. Dont believe it? When I was serving in the military in Germany in 1970 it was illegal to hook and release fish as this caused them unnecessary trauma. At the local carp fishing tournaments you were required to club them in the head so they would not suffer from suffocation.
Organize and your fishing priveleges(not seen as rights anymore) will be preserved much longer(hopefully forever).
