The skinnee for 11-17-2008

Decided it was too cold and windy to mess with the grill tonight, so I tried something different.

Broiled lobster “on the top” brushed with lots of butter and garlic
&
Parmesan grouper.

Had to take a break from grilled, fried and blackened.
By the way it was excellent!!

I believe courtland used his 1st round draft pick on marsh monkey already. Forgive me if I’m wrong.

More like brought up from the minors on a wish and a prayer. Last go around he was on the beanbag drinking mai-tai’s. He begged me for another shot and promised to clean all the fish.

I just need him for his limit.

Edit: Plus he is small and fits in one of the fishboxes, to keep him out of the way.

Here’s a question. Is there a rig you can use on a rod and reel to catch lobster? The reason I ask is I used to catch Dungeness crabs in Oregon on a steel ring that had four 80# mono loops on it. It seems to me that something like that could be used for lobster, but I am just wondering. Has anyone ever caught one on a rod and reel rig? If so, what was the setup?

I know you could not catch one the size of the one in the picture. That one is HUGE!!! One swish of that ones tail and he would go a country mile.

Congratulations on your appoach to fine dining.

Keep your fork, the best is yet to come.

They’ve been caught around here before on hook and line, and I’ve seen in NC where some where caught during the day, but most of the time, the lobsters that we see are pretty well hunkered down in the rock. If they come out of hiding too far, they get eaten. Also, we usually only see a few of them each day, so I think that statistically, you would have a hard time to be in the right place at the right time around here. I’m not saying that it’s not possible, but I wouldn’t rush out to buy a lobster rod to give it a shot. I would think it’s a numbers game around here where the odds are well stacked against you.

My dad and granddad said they used to snag them by accident back in the day using standard bottom rigs made out of 200# test mono and electric reels. Don’t know how big they were, but that’s what I was told. Said they only caught 2 or 3 over about 15-20 years. I’ve fished where I was told there were dozens on the bottom and I’ve not brought one up.

How did this steel ring with loops thing you speak of work?

Luke 8:22-25

Actually it worked well. I would catch one Dungeness crab each day before starting to fish for Salmon. I went out on the flats of the Smith River in 15-20’ water. I generally had one in 15 minutes, so regardless of how the Salmon fishing went, dinner was caught. I simply baited the ring, placed it on bottom and once a minute lifted it to feel the crab, when I felt him, I gave a hard tug and one of the four mono loops would tighten around some part of the crab. I would put him in a 5-gal bucket and go fishing.
