think he'll live?

About 25 years ago a friend of mine was bass fishing in the Cooper River, and caught a mudfish that was about 10-12 lbs. All he had to grip the fish was a pair of Vise Grips, so he clamped them on the lower jaw to get his crankbait back. The mudfish jerked his head and pulled down, and swam away with the Vise Grips firmly clamped on him.

Two weeks later, I was in the same area, and saw something shiny moving in the water out of the corner of my eye. It was that same mudfish, still swimming around with the Vise Grips firmly clamped.

I pitched a plastic worm in front of him, caught him, and gave the Vise Grips back to my buddy two days later. So, don’t be surprised if someone starts a post here, …“Looky at what I caught!!!”…

I think bogas are used because some guy with sponsors all over his redfish tournament shirt was using one and he looked cool! They do nothing to help preserve the fish! Use your hands and get em’ back in the water asap, the fish will live just fine!

I HAVE SPENT MOST OF MY LIFE FISHING AND WASTED THE REST OF IT!

I agree w titan. Man up

I am a firm believer in a net. It’s quicker and easier, less break offs at the boat. Never seen a need for a tool to grab a red, if you want to grab it just man up reach down and grab it.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

If it doesn’t have sharp teeth or a stinging tail, use a net or grab him by the lip, unhook and let him go.

Man up…a treble hook in the finger is no problem

That sucks. i never even thought about that happening. I have some grips but it is much harder for me to use them than to just lip him or flip him. From now on, if i use them i will be sure to use the wrist sling.

  • I’d rather be a free man in my grave than living as a puppet or a slave.

Wrist sling can hurt you big time on a big fish.Get the dog leash that retracts. It works great. You have 15 feet of good connection.

Stonoman

I would just string a piece of pool noodle to it, even though those lip grips float on their own. Those noodles are super floaty and sooner than later it would pop back up.

Ever since the "Boga’ was introduced there seems to be a perception that having a net in the boat isn’t “Cool”. Although I’ve succomed to the Boga in the past, I’ve gone back to a net…cheaper, reliable, and a long handle beats leaning over the side with my older, thicker, less flexable 60 year old body.
